Cherry Vintage Audio Revives ‘Golden Age’ Equipment for Music Enthusiasts

Cherry Vintage Audio refurbishes and sells ‘golden age’ equipment

In a nondescript building on Rutherford Street in Greenville, South Carolina, music enthusiasts can find a hidden gem that draws visitors from near and far. Cherry Vintage Audio, owned by Albie Frates, specializes in refurbishing and selling vintage audio equipment from the ‘golden age’ of HiFi.

A Wonderland for Audiophiles

Tucked away next to a tobacco shop and a barber, Cherry Vintage Audio is a haven for audiophiles looking for receivers, amps, tuners, speakers, turntables, and tape decks from the 1960s through the 1990s. Frates, with over 50 years of audio experience, carefully curates each setup to showcase the quality and uniqueness of the equipment.

The Golden Age of HiFi

Frates believes that the equipment from the ’70s and early ’80s represents the golden age of HiFi, characterized by superior craftsmanship, exceptional sound quality, and eye-catching design. Each item in the store comes with a detailed description of its features and functionality, providing customers with valuable insights into the products.

A Passion for Audio

Having retired from multiple careers, Frates’s passion for audio technology continues to drive him in his business ventures. He opened Cherry Vintage Audio in California in 2014 before relocating to Greenville in 2017. Despite his vast experience, Frates maintains a hands-on approach to the store, personally selecting and refurbishing each piece of equipment.

A Unique Shopping Experience

Cherry Vintage Audio operates on its own terms, only opening its doors to customers on Fridays and Saturdays. However, Frates is accommodating and willing to schedule appointments for those unable to visit during regular hours. While the store primarily caters to in-person shoppers, Frates may consider shipping items on a case-by-case basis.

Beyond Audio Equipment

Aside from vintage audio gear, Cherry Vintage Audio offers a selection of beer-themed lighting, unique posters, and other artistic items to enhance the shopping experience. Visitors are also welcome to browse Frates’s personal collection of albums, though these are not available for purchase.
