Greenville Welcomes New Dean at USC School of Medicine

Greenville, SC – The University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville has recently appointed Dr. Phyllis MacGilvray as its new dean. This marks a significant step for the medical school as MacGilvray becomes the first physician board-certified in Lifestyle Medicine to lead a medical school recognized by the American College of Lifestyle Medicine as platinum-certified.

Dr. MacGilvray brings a wealth of experience in both primary care and medical education to her new position. Having served as the senior associate dean for academic affairs at the School of Medicine Greenville from 2022 to 2024, she has overseen important areas such as undergraduate medical education and the school’s innovative Primary Care Accelerated Track program. This program plays a vital role in addressing the nationwide physician shortage.

A native of Abbeville, SC, MacGilvray has dedicated twenty years to family medicine practice. Previously, as the chair of the Family Medicine Department at Prisma Health Upstate and the School of Medicine Greenville, she successfully tripled the capacity for new residency programs, creating more pathways for future medical students. Her leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic helped improve efficiency and morale within the Primary Care Service Line.

In addition to her roles in Greenville, MacGilvray has held positions at various renowned institutions, including the Eastern Virginia Medical School and the Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune. She has received multiple awards from the USC School of Medicine, including recognitions from the Gold Humanism Honor Society.

Expressing her excitement about this new chapter, MacGilvray stated, “I am honored to have the opportunity to lead our medical school into the next chapter of our very exciting journey. I am deeply committed to our students, faculty, and staff as we tackle challenges in healthcare and strive to enhance health and wellbeing in our community.”

The School of Medicine Greenville, which opened its doors to its first class in July 2012, is known for its unique and innovative curriculum. MacGilvray’s leadership is expected to not only inspire current medical students but also enhance the school’s reputation as a center for medical education focused on patient care.

With her focus on education, innovation, and collaboration, the future looks promising for the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville as it continues to prepare compassionate and skilled physicians.
