Schools and Colleges in Upstate South Carolina Affected by Hurricane Helene

Greenville, South Carolina – Upstate South Carolina has been significantly impacted by Hurricane Helene, leading to class cancellations and closures at numerous schools and colleges in the area. In light of severe flooding and damage from the storm, many institutions are taking extra precautions to ensure the safety of their students and staff.

Clemson University Opens Facilities for Community Support

Clemson University has announced that it will open several facilities on Sunday, September 29, to assist community members in need. The Littlejohn Coliseum and the Snow Family Outdoor Fitness and Wellness Complex will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for city residents seeking respite. The Hendrix Student Center will also be accessible from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. for community members to recharge devices and enjoy WiFi access. The facilities will offer limited food and drinks and showers for those affected.

Limestone University and Anderson University Cancel Classes

Limestone University has decided to cancel classes on Monday, September 30, due to fuel shortages and ongoing power outages. The university is assessing the situation daily to ensure the safety of its community. Similarly, Anderson University has also suspended classes and activities through Tuesday. Students are encouraged to return home if it is safe to do so.

Furman University and Wofford College Close Until Wednesday

Furman University’s campus is closed through Wednesday due to a lack of power, with Duke Power indicating that restoration might not happen until Tuesday. All classes and activities are canceled during this time. Wofford College has also announced a cancellation of classes through Tuesday.

Local Community Colleges and High Schools Adapt to Closure

All campuses of Spartanburg Community College will be closed until Monday, while Spartanburg Methodist College has canceled classes for the entire week. USC Upstate closed its campus through Monday with classes canceled through Tuesday. Converse University has also announced a suspension of classes through Monday due to similar challenges.

School Districts Implement E-Learning and Closures

Anderson County schools will observe an e-Learning Day on Monday, September 30, with flexibility offered for families without access to power or the internet. Meanwhile, Greenville County Schools have announced closures for both Monday and Tuesday as widespread outages hinder e-learning. All Spartanburg County school districts are also closed on Monday and Tuesday, with notes that e-learning may not be possible due to the outages.

Hurricane Helene’s Impact

The aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which has brought up to 10 inches of rain to the region, has left many areas dealing with mud, uprooted trees, and blocked roads. Schools and colleges are making every effort to ensure safety while navigating the impact of the storm.
