Upstate school districts switch to eLearning on day of eclipse

Upstate school districts are switching to eLearning on Monday, April 8 due to the solar eclipse. According to one district, a solar eclipse will be visible across much of North America on this day. In Greenville, the eclipse will occur from approximately 1:51 to 4:24 p.m., peaking at 3:09 p.m., with the sun being 82 percent covered.

Safety and Academic Considerations

Both Greenville County Schools and Spartanburg County School Districts have decided to transition to an eLearning day. After evaluating various options like early dismissal, late dismissals, and eLearning, the districts determined that an eLearning day is the best choice. E-learning ensures students’ safety, allows parents to supervise their children during the eclipse, and enables more academic instruction compared to other options considered. The decision was made after ruling out all other alternatives due to the challenges they presented.

Preparation and Education

In the lead-up to April 8, schools will educate students about the eclipse and provide safety tips for viewing the eclipse while safeguarding their vision. For more information on the eclipse, visit the provided link.

Challenges Ahead

The school districts are working to provide resources and support to ensure a smooth transition to eLearning on the day of the eclipse. The switch aims to balance safety concerns, academic needs, and the logistical challenges of early dismissals.

Stay tuned for more updates on how the Upstate school districts are preparing for the solar eclipse on April 8.
