Aldon Knight Appointed as Executive Director of Upstate Forever from May 2024
In a recent announcement made by local conservation nonprofit, Upstate Forever, it has been confirmed that Aldon Knight will be taking up the reins as Executive Director of the organization from May 1, 2024 onwards.
Knight’s Journey with Upstate Forever
Based in Upstate South Carolina, Aldon Knight has been an essential part of Upstate Forever since 2015, serving as the Director of Development and Community Relations. His tenure in this role has seen him establish the Wyche Society major gift program, strategically cultivate planned giving, and successfully direct an $8 million “Crossroads” capital campaign.
A Transition in Leadership
The decision to elevate Knight to the primary leadership role was a strategic decision made by the board of Upstate Forever and Andrea Cooper, the outgoing Executive Director. The board unanimously agreed Knight had the requisite skills to carry the organization into its next phase.
Continued Role for Andrea Cooper
Andrea Cooper will be stepping down from her role as Executive Director to assume a new role in strategy, donor relations, and special projects at Upstate Forever in May 2024.
Cooper’s tenure as Executive Director since 2015 has yielded significant successes including a growth in personnel from 17 to 26 employees, the conservation of over 17,000 acres of Upstate land, the establishment of a $1.5 million water quality fund in Anderson County, and the successful prevention of an unnecessary transmission line through the Blue Ridge Mountains.
New Chapter for Upstate Forever
“Andrea has been a visionary leader for this organization, which is no easy task. I am grateful for her leadership and support as we begin this transition process and look forward to serving the organization in my new role.” said Knight.
Stakeholder Support
News of the leadership transition has been shared with Upstate Forever’s staff, major donors, conservation partners, and other primary stakeholders, who have all shown their support for the plan. “The board and I are confident that he has the skills, knowledge, connections, and temperament to keep building on the strong foundation we have laid together.” said Cooper about Knight’s appointment.
With a total of 34 years in administration, leadership, and fund development roles, Aldon Knight’s appointment is going to be instrumental in the growth and development of Upstate Forever. His rich history with the organization and deep understanding of its work make him the ideal choice for leading the organization in its mission to conserve and protect the region’s valuable natural resources.
Moving Forward
Upstate Forever’s transition of leadership signifies a mature, thriving organization poised to leverage its momentum into impactful results for the region’s natural resources and community. As Knight assumes his new role, one thing remains certain: the organization’s commitment to preserve, protect, and beautify Upstate South Carolina is unwavering.
