In an unfortunate incident that took place on Sunday in Clinton, South Carolina, a firefighter lost his life while another sustained injuries. The horrific accident involved multiple vehicles, including a firetruck. The accident occurred near Highway 72, at the intersection of Springdale Drive and Williard Road.
The deceased firefighter was identified as 27-year-old Michael Vinson of Laurens. The firefighter served the Clinton Fire Department with dedication and was in the fire engine during the tragic crash. His colleague, another firefighter, was flown to Spartanburg Regional Hospital for treatment and was released on Monday.
The ill-fated fire truck was reported to be heading east on Williard Road when it crashed into a 2006 Lexus traveling north on Springdale Road. The driver of the Lexus suffered non-fatal injuries and was promptly taken to a nearby hospital.
The City of Clinton expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Firefighter Vinson. In an official statement, they disclosed the accident details and emphasized how essential it was to keep all parties involved in thoughts and prayers.
Following the incident, community members and fellow first responders gathered outside the Clinton municipal building on North Broad Street for a prayer vigil on Monday. Guest speakers eulogized the life and service of Michael Vinson and shared comforting words to the mourning community.
On the following day, a memorial was established outside the Laurens County Fire Department featuring the uniform of Vinson. “He was well-liked by everyone,” said Fire Marshal Donya Langston. “Very soft-spoken but a great person and a great firefighter, and he will be greatly missed.”
Local officials announced a procession to take place on Tuesday, to bring the body of Vinson home to Laurens County from Prisma Health’s Greenville Memorial Hospital. A public memorial service has been scheduled at Union Baptist Church in Laurens at 2 p.m. on Friday.
Several agencies from across Upstate offered their support and expressed condolences following the tragic news. The loss of the heroic firefighter has deeply affected the community and emergency services, stirring a collective feeling of grief across the Upstate.
