Say hello 821: New area code officially launches in Upstate

Greenville, SC – August 19, 2024

Today marks the official launch of the new 821 area code in Upstate South Carolina, with phone numbers now being issued with the fresh three-number prefix. The move comes after state officials announced last November that the Upstate region, encompassing Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, and other cities, would be assigned a new second area code, requiring all calls in the area to include one of the two codes.

In a news release from the Public Service Commission of South Carolina, the changes are outlined as follows:

Key Changes

  • 821 joins 864 as the second three-digit area code for the Upstate, effective January.
  • Since January, individuals have had the option to dial 10 digits with either area code.
  • Starting July 19, dialing with an area code has become mandatory.
  • The new 821 area code covers the same geographic area as the current 864 area code, spanning across various counties.
  • New phone numbers are now being assigned with the 821 area code.
  • Existing phone numbers with the 864 area code will remain unchanged.

Area Code History

With the forecast of the 864 area code running out of available phone numbers by the end of 2025, the introduction of the 821 area code aims to alleviate the strain on the existing system. The state’s area code evolution began in 1947 when South Carolina operated under a single area code, 803.

In 1995, the 864 area code was introduced for the Upstate region, splitting from the 803 code. Subsequently, in 1998, the 843 area code was added to cover the Lowcountry, Grand Strand, Pee Dee, and surrounding areas.

Upstate Communication Landscape

Residents and businesses in the Upstate are urged to familiarize themselves with the new area code requirements to ensure seamless communication in the region. The 821 area code will now be an integral part of the Upstate’s phone number system, alongside the longstanding 864 code.

For more information and updates on the new area code implementation, individuals are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and announcements from the Public Service Commission of South Carolina.

Stay connected for the latest news and developments in the Upstate communication sector as the transition to the 821 area code rolls out across the region.
