United Airlines Launches New Nonstop Flight from GSP to Washington, D.C. Area

Greenville, South Carolina – United Airlines is set to introduce a new nonstop service from Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) to Washington-Dulles International Airport (IAD) starting September 26th. The announcement was made by David Edwards, president and CEO of the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport District.

Washington-Dulles, located in Dulles, Virginia, is an important gateway to the nation’s capital and the wider Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. This new service will not only provide convenient access to the capital city but also offer valuable connections for international travelers heading to destinations in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

“In addition to being a critical link to our nation’s capital, Washington-Dulles is a valuable access point for international passengers traveling to and from GSP and major destinations in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East,” said David Edwards. “We welcome the resumption of service on this very important route for our region.”

Enhanced Connectivity and Convenience

United Airlines will operate three daily nonstop flights between GSP and IAD using 50-seat and Embraer 145 aircraft. Tickets for these flights are already available for purchase on the airline’s website, www.united.com.

The reintroduction of this route is particularly significant, as United Airlines had previously served the GSP to Washington-Dulles route for many years before suspending the service in 2022 due to the adverse effects of the global pandemic. With the resumption of this route, United Airlines will now offer daily nonstop service to a total of five destinations from GSP, including Chicago/O’Hare, Denver, Houston, and New York/Newark.

Expanding Connectivity at Greenville-Spartanburg Airport

The introduction of the new United Airlines route is part of Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport’s ongoing efforts to expand its domestic and international connectivity. In 2024 alone, GSP has already introduced nine other routes, bringing the total number of nonstop destinations served by the airport to a record-breaking 27.

Earlier this year, Breeze Airways launched nonstop flights to Providence, Rhode Island; Tampa, Florida; Los Angeles, California; Orlando, Florida; and Hartford, Connecticut. Southwest Airlines also added nonstop flights to Denver, Colorado, and Nashville, Tennessee. Additionally, Avelo Airlines began offering nonstop service to Rochester, New York, and Boston-Manchester, Massachusetts.

Implications for Travelers

The introduction of the new United Airlines nonstop service to Washington, D.C., area will provide greater convenience and flexibility for travelers from the Upstate South Carolina region. Whether they are traveling for business or leisure, passengers can now enjoy seamless connectivity to the nation’s capital, as well as easy connections to international destinations. The new flights will also save travelers valuable time by eliminating the need for layovers and multiple connections.

Boosting the Local Economy

Improved air connectivity is not only beneficial for travelers but also for the local economy. The new flight service will help attract more business and leisure travelers to the Upstate South Carolina region, boosting tourism and supporting the growth of local businesses.

“The resumption of nonstop service between GSP and Washington-Dulles is a significant step forward for our region,” said David Edwards. “It will strengthen our economic ties with the nation’s capital and create new opportunities for travel and commerce. We are excited to welcome United Airlines back and look forward to a successful partnership.”
