Tragic Loss in Simpsonville: 8-Year-Old Boy Found Dead in Pond
Simpsonville, S.C. — The community is mourning after the body of an 8-year-old boy was discovered in a pond, following his disappearance from Bell’s Crossing Elementary School on Thursday. The child, identified as Lionel Ramirez Cervantes, had run away from his classroom while in a school session with two other students and three staff members.
Details of the Incident
According to Greenville County Schools, Lionel fled the classroom and exited the building, eventually going over or through a fence, disappearing into tall grass where he could no longer be seen. School officials immediately contacted the police, prompting a swift search effort involving local police, school personnel, and members of the community.
Search Efforts
Tragically, divers located Lionel’s body approximately 1,000 feet from his school. The search lasted about four hours, intensifying the worries of his family and friends. Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis expressed the heartbreak felt by the community, stating, “A lot of broken hearts in that school and community today.”
Investigation Underway
Before Lionel was found, authorities indicated that he might have autism or a similar developmental disorder, making him less likely to respond to conventional verbal prompts. As investigations into the circumstances surrounding his departure from school continue, officials emphasized that staff members acted quickly in trying to prevent his exit.

The principal of Bell’s Crossing Elementary, Chris Ross, spoke about the devastation in the school and highlighted their commitment to support Lionel’s family and provide grief counseling for students and staff. “This was our worst fear today, and we are grieving as a community,” he said.
