Exciting Times for Greenville: Tourism on the Rise!

Greenville, South Carolina is experiencing a whirlwind of momentum when it comes to its tourism industry! Just last week, on September 4, VisitGreenvilleSC gathered locals and stakeholders for its annual meeting to discuss some pretty impressive statistics that highlight the impact of tourism on our charming city. Grab your coffee, and let’s dive into the numbers!

$2.3 Billion Impact

First off, can we just take a moment to appreciate that for every dollar spent on advertising by the city and county’s designated tourism promoter, we see a stunning $245 in visitor spending? That is no small feat! Overall, tourism made a whopping $2.3 billion impact on Greenville County over the past year. Yes, you read that right—a billion!

Tax Revenue Boost

The economic benefits don’t stop there. This tourism boom translated into over $45.4 million in tax revenue, which is a nice little financial boost for local initiatives. Out of that amount, more than $30 million came from the local hospitality tax. This is a 2 percent fee that diners and drinkers contribute when they enjoy a meal or beverage in the city. Makes you feel a bit better about that weekend brunch, doesn’t it?

Marketing Upgrades

So what helped drive these numbers? VisitGreenvilleSC has taken a bold step by revamping its marketing strategy! CEO Heath Dillard shared that they had retired the former hashtag #yeahTHATgreenville after analyzing market research. The goal was to shift the focus onto what makes our Greenville stand out from the rest—no more confusion with similar-sounding cities! Since rolling out the new marketing campaign at the start of January 2024, they’ve seen record-breaking website traffic. In just five months, the VisitGreenvilleSC website racked up 4.7 million visitors! Wowza!

Major Events on the Horizon

What’s even more jaw-dropping is that in FY2024 alone, the organization has already hosted 214 events, resulting in over 80,000 hotel room nights utilized. You know what that translates to? Lots of cozy beds being filled with happy visitors exploring our beautiful downtown! And brace yourselves—there are still 233 more events scheduled, which are estimated to bring in over 155,000 room nights and an anticipated $100.7 million impact!

Community Support

City Councilwoman Dorothy Dowe noted that this tourist influx comes with its own set of challenges. “We are no longer a sleepy Southern town,” she remarked during the meeting. It’s thrilling, but it also has an impact on everyday life for residents. Thankfully, tourism revenue is being funneled into public projects that aim to benefit locals too, such as affordable housing and public safety initiatives—essentially allowing us to enjoy our lovely city without losing its charm.

Future Vision

Interestingly, our local tax revenue has also paved the way for funding exciting new amenities, including a skate park—a long-awaited wish for many kids and teens in the region. The city’s continuing commitment to invest in these projects speaks volumes about balancing tourism and community needs.

Wrapping It Up

As we reflect on the exciting developments for tourism in Greenville, it’s clear that we are on a path of growth and recognition. From impressive visitor spending and robust tax revenues to large events that are putting our city on the map, it’s clear that Greenville is stepping into the spotlight—and what a show it is! So, whether you’re a lifelong resident or a first-time visitor, next time you’re in downtown Greenville, take a moment to appreciate all that’s happening around you. The future looks bright!
