‘The Lion King’ Roars Again at the Peace Center
In Greenville, Disney’s iconic hit, “The Lion King“, is once again set to steal the show at the Peace Center. The musical continues its reign as the highest-grossing production of all time, boasting over $1.9 billion in revenues. Its return is marked by two dozen performances over an engaging three-week run from September 11th to 29th.
Storyline and Acclaim
The storyline is based on the young prince, Simba, who grapples with challenges on his path to becoming king amid political turmoil and environmental imbalance. Critically acclaimed for being the largest production on tour, “The Lion King” guarantees a strong season opener for the 2024-25 Broadway Series at the Peace Center. The musical has enjoyed sold-out performances on its previous visits in 2012 and 2017.
Stellar Performances and Unique Design
With endearing compositions like “Circle of Life” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” by Elton John, the show is renowned for featuring hundreds of masks and puppets. These represent up to 25 species of animals, birds, fish, and insects. Its universal appeal spans across multiple generations of theater-goers. Nick LaMedica, an actor who plays Zazu, the king’s advisor, explained, “Everyone in the audience has a different avenue into the show, whether it’s the music, the story, the choreography, the puppetry, the masks, or the costuming.”
The show makers, Michael Curry and Julie Taymor, spent over a year and a half designing more than 200 masks and puppets for the show. “We knew we really wanted to pay homage to African art, to conjure the beauty and authenticity of Africa.”, said Curry. The masks allow the audience to see the characters as both human and animal all at once.
