Following her endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris after the recent debate, many are curious if this will sway voters, especially in closely contested states across the U.S.
Swift, known for her chart-topping hits, is also making headlines for her ability to influence American politics. According to data from a Virginia-based analysis company, Resonate, approximately 2.3 million Americans in battleground states are likely to be influenced by celebrity endorsements. This figure is drawn from their analysis of online interactions across a sample size of 250 million people.
After Swift’s recent Instagram post, which criticized former President Donald Trump while supporting Harris, many voters might be reconsidering their choices. Resonate suggests that 667,000 voters in Florida, around 29% of those influenced by Swift, may be open to supporting Harris. This could potentially change Florida’s status to a battleground state, which is crucial considering its history in elections.
While many might think that only younger, female voters would be swayed, the data indicates a more diverse group. The majority of those open to voting for Harris are likely to be millennial women. However, it’s important to note that there is still a significant portion of the population that remains undecided about whom they will support.
Swift’s influence isn’t limited to politics. Earlier this year, her relationship with NFL star Travis Kelce helped boost viewership among teenage girls by 8% during the NFL season. Her appearance at the Super Bowl 58 contributed to it being the most-watched telecast ever, drawing in 123.4 million viewers.
Interestingly, Swift’s endorsement affected presidential betting markets too. Her impact was felt during and after the debate, with a noticeable jump in Harris’ odds, according to various betting platforms. However, it’s worth mentioning that betting on presidential elections is not legal in the U.S.
Swift’s endorsement has also made waves online. In just 24 hours after her Instagram post, Vote.gov saw nearly 406,000 visitors from a custom link she shared. In comparison, the site had only about 30,000 visitors daily before her endorsement. Although Vote.gov does not directly register voters, it automatically directs visitors to their respective state election sites, where they can find information on the registration process.
Among the 2.3 million people touched by Swift’s influence, about 79% are already registered voters. Additionally, about 36% of these potential voters say they are now more likely to participate in the upcoming election. However, it’s important to note that not all of these individuals are firmly in Harris’ camp — around 874,000 are still undecided, identifying as moderates on various issues.
As the election approaches, Taylor Swift’s influence may continue to shape voter sentiment in the U.S. With her ability to mobilize millions, it remains to be seen how her endorsement will ultimately affect the ballots come November.
