Homecoming concert excitement

Greenville Welcomes Taylor McCall Back Home

Exciting things are happening in Greenville as the well-loved singer-songwriter Taylor McCall gets ready to light up the stage at the Radio Room on September 26. If you’ve been tuning in to his music, you might already know that McCall has been on quite the journey since the release of his album “Black Powder Soul” in 2021. The Upstate native finally broke through the noise and captured the attention of many with his collection of bluesy tunes that have a rock ‘n’ roll swagger about them. It’s only natural to think, “Wow, what more could a guy want?” But, believe it or not, it hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows for him.

A Journey of Pressure and Discovery

McCall openly admits that after the success of “Black Powder Soul,” he found himself in a bit of a pickle. Just when the music world was beginning to pay attention to him, he felt the pressure of creating something even bigger and better. “After I made ‘Black Powder Soul,’ I went through a weird phase,” he shares. “I had this great project and now I’m releasing it to the world, but I love making music so much that I was already sonically searching for what I was going to do next.”

Many of us can understand the feeling of being overwhelmed with expectations, whether self-imposed or otherwise. McCall realized that he needed to let go of the crushing weight of creating an immediate follow-up and instead focus on allowing “Black Powder Soul” to shine. Luckily, after some soul-searching, the music began to flow again.

Introducing “Mellow War”

Earlier this year, McCall debuted his newest album, “Mellow War”, which takes a distinct turn from the boldness of his previous work. Gone are the days of pure stomp and swagger; this time around, he invites listeners into a world of more subtle, pulsating rock sounds. “It’s a great album for dark nights of the soul or contemplative Sunday mornings,” McCall describes aptly. The artwork features a moving photograph of his grandfather, a Vietnam veteran, whose story interweaves through the fabric of the album.

Listeners kick off this intriguing auditory experience with a heartfelt clip of McCall’s grandparents singing a gospel song—a beautiful nod to his roots. “I’m always searching for a way to make an album a cohesive body of work,” he explains regarding the production style that gives “Mellow War” its dreamy but dark vibe.

What’s Next for Taylor McCall?

On the horizon, McCall eagerly anticipates his return to Greenville. “I haven’t been back in a little while,” he says, buzzing with excitement. “I definitely can’t wait to get back there soon to see my good family and friends. I’m excited to come play down there.” Fans can expect a remarkable live performance, as McCall brings his new sound to the Radio Room.
