The rising cost of diapers and baby supplies is placing significant strain on many young parents. In response, the women of the Delta Sigma Theta Alumnae Chapter are organizing a donation drive to support young families in need by partnering with Nicholtown Child and Family Collaborative.
The Nicholtown Child and Family Collaborative in Greenville is creating a supportive environment for parents through its 14-week program. This initiative offers nurturing skills and practices for young parents with children aged 0 to 5, including pregnant teens. Executive Director Randolyn Harmon explained, “It’s a 14-week program where we provide nurturing skills practices for young parents who have children ages 0 to 5. Also, if you’re a young person that’s pregnant, you can participate in our program.”
The organization supports parents aged 13 to 25, aiming to equip them with the necessary skills to become nurturing caregivers. However, the organization itself is in need of supplies. Harmon stated, “The items that we need are diapers, wipes, divided plates, strollers, bibs, pacifiers—anything that a young child ages 0 to 5 would need. Our goal is to provide our families with these items as part of our program.”
This is where the Greenville Delta Sigma Theta Alumnae Chapter steps in. President Marjon Ford highlighted, “We’re just really trying to showcase this specific charity in this community as one that provides support along the lines that we are interested in as an organization. The care and support of women and their babies is important to us.”
Ford aims to help at least 50 families through the program, but the goal is set higher. She added, “Our goal is to try to help at least 100 families and, of course, more is always better. Anyone who is in need.” Ford is optimistic about exceeding this target, emphasizing the importance of providing encouragement and assistance to those in need.
“We want everyone to feel like they have a fighting chance, that they can, with a little bit of help or even just some good encouragement, make the best of whatever situation they’re in. They can give back, be involved, and strive for a better quality of life,” Ford stated.
Ultimately, the collaboration between Delta Sigma Theta INC. and Nicholtown Child and Family Collaborative aims to alleviate the financial burden faced by struggling young parents and provide them with the necessary support to care for their children.
