The race for the starting quarterback role in the South Carolina football team has been settled this week. Freshman LaNorris Sellers has been confirmed as the starting quarterback over senior Robby Ashford for South Carolina’s 2024 season. South Carolina’s head coach, Shane Beamer, made this announcement on Tuesday.
Robby Ashford, a former Auburn quarterback, transferred to South Carolina after seeing a decrease in his role under Auburn’s new head coach, Hugh Freeze, during the 2023 season. Despite hopes of claiming the position of starting quarterback for his new team, the spot was filled by the rookie, Sellers.
Ashford’s failure to claim the starting job will be a severe blow for the 21-year-old, especially considering the active role he played as a starting quarterback for Auburn in 2022. From a total of 27 passes, last season, Ashford, who hails from Hoover, AL, will likely have a similar record in 2024’s season.
It’s also speculated that Beamer might allow his rookie quarterback to play without much interference to give him the opportunity to develop his skills on-field. This decision, of course, makes it less likely for Ashford to lead his team this season unless Sellers’ health or performance causes any major concerns.
The forthcoming season is not predicted to be a strong one for South Carolina, which could potentially further impact Ashford’s chance to redeem himself. Ashford, Sellers, and the Gamecocks are set to open the season against Old Dominion on August 31. The game will take place at Columbia.
If everything goes as expected, Ashford’s lack of opportunities to prove himself might mark an unfortunate end to the journey of this former four-star recruit.
