Greenville, mark your calendars because Southern Culture on the Skids (SCOTS) is coming to town! On Friday, December 6, the much-loved band will be taking the stage at the Radio Room located at 28 Liberty Lane. If you’re a fan of infectious riffs, cheeky lyrics, and that unmistakable Southern charm, you won’t want to miss this show!
Leading the charge is the charismatic Rick Miller, the band’s esteemed singer-songwriter and an absolutely phenomenal guitar player. Since SCOTS formed way back in 1983 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Miller has been dishing out some of the most memorable guitar riffs in rock history. Whether he’s blending surf rock with punk attitude or throwing in some sleazy blues, Miller has a knack for crafting sounds that stick in your head.
Ever heard “Camel Walk”? If so, you know what we’re talking about! With his trusty red-hot Danelectro guitar, Miller can light up the stage with hits such as “Mojo Box” and “King of the Mountain.” He attributes his eclectic sound to his childhood experiences listening to AM radio in Henderson, North Carolina. “Those stations played everything from soul to rock ’n’ roll that influenced me a ton,” Miller shares. He’s especially fond of the legendary Steve Cropper and the unforgettable sounds of Booker T. & The MGs.
The band is known for its hilarious send-ups of redneck culture, with songs like “Dirt Track Date” offering a light-hearted look at life from a Southern perspective. Drummer Dave Hartman and bassist Mary Huff, who have been a part of the SCOTS family since 1987, give each song that signature SCOTS groove. Plus, Huff’s gorgeous vocals shine through on stunning ballads like “Just How Lonely” and cheeky tracks like “Hittin’ on Nothing.” It’s genuinely a collaborative effort where fun and musicianship go hand in hand.
For Miller, making music is more than just a job; it’s a love affair. He insists on the importance of the band’s tight-knit relationship and creative freedom, stating, “We love making music. That’s the No. 1 thing. And we all get along.”
They have carved out their own niche in the music industry by running their own record label and studio, treating their craft like a small business. “It’s a blast!” Miller adds. You can feel the excitement radiating from the band as they prepare for their return to Greenville, a place that has embraced their music for decades.
Although it’s been some time since SCOTS graced venues like Gottrocks and The Handlebar, Miller is eager to reconnect with their Greenville fans. “We’ve been playing the Greenville-Spartanburg area since the late ’80s, and we’ve always had a great fanbase in the Upstate. It’s going to be exciting playing a place we’ve never played before!”
