61-Year-Old Surfer Critically Injured in Shark Attack at Waiehu Beach Park

Shark Attack in Waiehu Leaves Surfer in Critical Condition

Waiehu, Maui – A 61-year-old surfer was critically injured in a shark attack at Waiehu Beach Park on Friday morning, as confirmed by local authorities. The injured man, identified by loved ones as “Kenji,” is currently receiving treatment at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Details of the Incident

The attack occurred shortly after 7 a.m., at a well-known surf spot called “Sandpiles.” Friends of Kenji reported that he is a regular surfer at this location. According to witnesses, he was sitting on his surfboard when a shark unexpectedly approached and bit his leg.

Witness David Basques recounted the shocking moment: “I heard this yell and I looked, and all of a sudden I just seen him splash, and I don’t know what was happening.” Basques saw Kenji making his way back to shore on his own, with the help of other surfers who quickly joined in to assist. “He swam himself back maybe more than half the way, and then I seen somebody jump in and they went to bring him inside,” Basques added.

Emergency Response

Maui Police Department (MPD) responded promptly to the scene, with officers applying a tourniquet to Kenji’s injured leg before medical personnel arrived. First responders confirmed that his leg was completely severed below the knee. Maui Fire Department Assistant Chief Jeff Giesea praised Kenji’s quick thinking and strength, stating, “I would like to commend the patient for his strength and wherewithal, getting himself to shore. I mean, that’s extraordinary.”

Giesea also commended the “Good Samaritans” who helped Kenji, as well as the MPD for their “quick action applying two combat application tourniquets to the patient’s leg.” He highlighted how such timely assistance can make a significant difference between life and death.

Kenji’s Condition and Community Support

After surgery, Kenji shared a positive note from the Intensive Care Unit, expressing, “I still love the ocean!” His friends have created a GoFundMe page to raise funds for his recovery, reflecting the community’s support during this difficult time.

Beach Closure and Safety Measures

In response to the incident, local officials have closed off Waiehu Beach Park and lifeguards are actively patrolling the waters. Beachgoers are advised to avoid entering the water from Paukukalo to Waihee until further notice, as safety remains a priority in the aftermath of the attack.

This unfortunate event has raised awareness about shark-related incidents in the area, and it highlights the unpredictability of ocean activities. While Waiehu Beach is generally a safe spot for surfers and swimmers, this incident serves as a reminder to remain vigilant.

As the community rallies around Kenji, many are hopeful for his recovery while also respecting the ocean’s untamed nature.
