School Closures in Greenville Due to Hurricane Helene

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Following the severe impacts of Hurricane Helene, several school districts in the Upstate have decided to close for the remainder of the week. This decision affects students and staff as the districts focus on ensuring safety and recovery in the aftermath of the storm.

Closed School Districts

The following school districts will be closed until Friday, October 4:

  • Greenville County Schools
  • All Spartanburg County School Districts
  • Cherokee County Schools
  • All Anderson County School Districts

School administrators cite the lack of stable power and the need to check over 370 individual bus routes as key reasons for the closures. The districts also announced that eLearning classes would not be held due to inconsistent power, Internet access, and cellular service across the region.

Future Plans

As for classes next week, the districts have not yet decided whether they will conduct in-person classes or eLearning sessions starting the week of October 7. They noted that it would take a minimum of 48 hours for cafeteria food supplies to be replenished following the restoration of power.

Other School District Schedule Changes

In addition to the closures, there are schedule changes for other districts:

  • The School District of Oconee County will close on Wednesday, October 2, and return to a normal schedule on Thursday, October 3.
  • The School District of Pickens County will be closed on both Wednesday, October 2 and Thursday, October 3.

The situation remains unstable as many continue to cope with the storm’s aftermath, and school districts are adjusting to ensure the safety of their students and staff during this time.
