GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C.—A devastating incident occurred on Friday morning involving a school bus, resulting in the death of a 47-year-old woman. The crash took place shortly after 8 a.m. on Geer Highway near Rock Quarry Road.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the school bus was traveling eastbound when it collided with a flatbed tow truck that had stopped in traffic. Following this initial impact, the bus veered into the westbound lanes, crashing head-on into an SUV.
Crystal A. Coggins, the driver of the SUV, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Greenville County Coroner’s Office. Reports indicate that the bus was carrying four students from Travelers Rest High School at the time of the accident. Fortunately, all four students were reported safe and unharmed.
Both the bus driver and the tow truck driver sustained injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The precise nature of their injuries has not been disclosed.
In response to the crash, officials from Greenville County Schools confirmed that the bus driver has been placed on administrative leave as part of standard procedure following such incidents. This measure aims to allow for a thorough investigation while ensuring the safety of students and staff.
Friday’s tragedy marks the third reported school bus crash in the Upstate region within the week. Prior incidents occurred on Wednesday in Oconee County and Thursday in Anderson County, both resulting in citations for the respective bus drivers involved. Investigations into these accidents are ongoing.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into Friday’s accident, working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash. South Carolina Highway Patrol has emphasized the importance of understanding how these collisions occur to prevent future incidents.
This accident has sent shockwaves through the Greenville community, raising concerns about the safety of school transportation. Parents and community members are particularly troubled by the frequency of bus crashes in recent days, prompting discussions about safety protocols and driver training.
Local authorities are urging drivers to remain vigilant on the roads, especially during peak school hours, to ensure the safety of students. The community is also rallying around the family of Crystal Coggins, offering condolences and support during this tragic time.
As the investigation into this latest incident unfolds, both the South Carolina Highway Patrol and local education officials are committed to uncovering the facts. Authorities emphasize their ongoing dedication to the safety of students as they assess current safety measures and the potential need for new initiatives.
This tragic event serves as a reminder of the risks associated with driving and the need for heightened awareness and caution on the roads.
