Greenville, SC – Exciting changes are on the horizon for the YMCA of Greenville as Sam Franklin steps into the role of CEO and president, starting September 28. He brings with him over three decades of experience with the Y, having dedicated 33 years to various branches across Tennessee, Kentucky, and the Carolinas.
Franklin’s journey with the YMCA began as a summer intern back in 1991, and from that moment, he felt a strong connection to the organization’s mission. “It’s more like a calling to serve,” he reflects, emphasizing how serving kids, families, and communities has been a pivotal part of his career. His appointment as CEO comes after the retirement of longtime leader Scot Baddley, who has shaped the organization over the past two decades.
Before stepping into his new role, Franklin served as the executive vice president and chief operating officer for the YMCA of Greenville. Throughout his career, he has worn many hats, transitioning from a program director to a vice president of operations. His experience within the organization has equipped him with the skills to make a significant impact.
“I’ve worked for some really great people, and I’ve been blessed to learn and grow from their leadership,” said Franklin while discussing his experiences. Since joining the YMCA of Greenville in 2017, he has contributed to numerous achievements, such as expanding sports programming for children, navigating challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, and creating strategic plans that have led to successful annual campaigns.
As a leader, Franklin believes in the importance of nurturing his staff. He strives to coach them while recognizing each individual’s unique personality and needs. This dedication has led to many of his team members advancing into higher roles. “We get an opportunity every single day to change a life, and that’s the true mission of the Y,” he passionately stated.
With his new position, Franklin has laid out clear goals for the YMCA of Greenville. His first priority is maintaining and improving existing facilities. The organization is currently working on the Prisma Health Family YMCA expansion project, which is expected to break ground within the next six months. This expansion aims to enhance the services offered and better serve the local community.
Additionally, funding has been secured to expand programming at the George I. Theisen Family YMCA branch in Travelers Rest, which is exciting news for that area. Franklin is also exploring the idea of relocating the Verdae YMCA since it is becoming too small for the growing populations it serves.
As Franklin looks toward the future, he is keenly aware of the need for growth. “How do we continue to elevate our programs and memberships at a level that stays consistent with the growth of Greenville County?” he poses. Ideas are already in the works as the team examines potential new sites for YMCA branches in emerging markets like Fountain Inn, Greer, and Taylors.
Graduating with a degree in marketing and public relations from Middle Tennessee State University in 1991, Franklin’s educational background has contributed to his successful career. However, his real-life lessons in serving others have shaped his approach to leadership within the organization.
Franklin’s vision is clear: to continue the legacy of the YMCA of Greenville while embracing new opportunities to enhance the community’s experience. “We’re not going to take the foot off the gas,” he assures, leaving everyone eager to see how his plans unfold.
