Salvation Army Launches $16 Million Campaign for New Shelter Campus in Greenville

"Homeless shelter fundraising concept"

The Salvation Army of Greenville, Oconee, and Pickens Counties has launched the Rebuilding Hope, Restoring Lives Campaign, a $16 million capital project to build a new shelter campus for men, women, and families in Greenville.

The current shelter, which dates back to the 1960s, has served its purpose but is in need of modernizing. The new facilities will provide improved living conditions for the homeless population in the area.

The upgraded shelter will provide more space, increasing the number of beds from 93 to 143 to assist more individuals and families experiencing homelessness. The new campus will include four shelter units: Men’s, Women’s & Children, Transitional, and Family. The Family and Transitional units will be equipped with kitchenettes and full bathrooms to offer a more comfortable living environment.

Major Michael Harris, area commander for the Salvation Army of Greenville, Oconee, and Pickens Counties, stated that the new facilities will match the work already being done by the shelter staff. He emphasized the importance of transitional housing in today’s economic climate, as it helps individuals become self-sufficient with the necessary support systems in place.

The campaign aims to raise $14 million for the demolition of the old shelter and the construction of the new campus. An additional $2 million will be used to create an operating endowment to maintain the shelter. Once the full amount has been raised, demolition is set to begin, with construction expected to commence in early 2025.

Greenville County has seen a rise in its homeless population as the area continues to grow. Major Harris stated that the new shelter will help meet the increasing demand and provide a safe space for those experiencing homelessness. He emphasized the importance of keeping families together and offering transitional housing to help individuals rebuild their lives.

According to Major Harris, there are many misconceptions about homelessness, and people often generalize those experiencing it. He stressed that each individual has their own unique story and that it’s essential to provide support tailored to their needs. He also highlighted the impact of upbringing on one’s circumstances.

The Salvation Army is committed to caring for those on the margins and providing shelter to the most marginalized individuals in the community. The Rebuilding Hope, Restoring Lives Campaign is a testament to their dedication and commitment to helping those in need.

The Salvation Army of Greenville, Oconee, and Pickens Counties is calling on the community to support the campaign and contribute to the effort to build a new shelter that will provide better living conditions and resources for individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Greenville.

Overall, the Rebuilding Hope, Restoring Lives Campaign aims to address the increasing issue of homelessness in Greenville County by providing a safe and supportive shelter that will facilitate the transition to self-sufficiency for those in need. The Salvation Army’s commitment to serving the “least of these” is steadfast, and with the community’s support, they can make a significant impact in improving the lives of individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Greenville.
