According to Master Trooper Brandon Bolt, the series of collisions began when a 2005 Ford pickup truck was traveling westbound on S.C. 20. Near the intersection with Winona Church Road, the pickup truck collided with a cow that unexpectedly wandered onto the roadway.
The impact caused the cow to be thrown into the eastbound lane of S.C. 20. Shortly afterward, a 2023 Toyota sedan struck the cow, followed by a 2013 Toyota SUV that also collided with the animal. Unfortunately, the driver of the Toyota sedan died at the scene.
The deceased was identified as Amy Ward, 52, a resident of Abbeville. The coroner’s office confirmed her passing on-site. In addition to the fatality, the driver of the Toyota SUV sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital. As of now, there is no updated information on the condition of the SUV driver. Remarkably, the driver of the pickup truck escaped unharmed, and no other injuries were reported.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident. They have not confirmed whether seat belts were worn by any of the drivers involved. The South Carolina Highway Patrol has stated that this incident is under investigation and more details will be provided as they become available.

As the community mourns the loss of Amy Ward, officials are working diligently to gather more information and raise awareness of road safety to prevent future accidents.
