FLORENCE – In a thrilling display of determination and skill, the Riverside High School girls basketball team secured a spot in the 4A state championship game after a standout performance in the Upper State championship. Led by their 5-foot-7 center, Elly Trickett, the Warriors faced off against Westside’s 6-foot-5 center, Khalia Hartwell, in a high-stakes showdown.
Despite the significant height difference, Trickett rose to the occasion and delivered a stellar performance on the court. The junior standout scored 14 points, with 12 of those points coming in the pivotal second and third quarters. Trickett’s exceptional play played a key role in Riverside’s impressive 61-48 victory over Westside, propelling the Warriors to their first-ever state title game in program history.
Trickett’s ability to hold her own against a taller opponent was a testament to her tenacity and skill. Going head-to-head with a highly touted freshman player with a scholarship offer from Mississippi State, Trickett demonstrated her versatility and determination on the court.
Reflecting on her performance, Trickett shared, “I have confidence in myself and my teammates. I know I can play against tall matchups and make an impact on the game. I may not be the tallest player on the court, but I can read situations well and contribute in various aspects of the game.”
Despite lacking in height compared to their opponents, Riverside’s girls basketball team showcased their resilience and spirit throughout the game. Coach Bri Jones praised her team’s unwavering determination, emphasizing their courage in facing challenges head-on.
“My girls may not be the biggest physically, but they have the biggest hearts,” said Coach Jones. “Elly’s tenacity and strength on the court exemplify the spirit of our team. We may face obstacles, but we never back down from a challenge.”
As Riverside prepares to compete in the state championship game, the players are filled with excitement and determination to make history for their school. The upcoming final game holds great significance for the Warriors, who are eager to clinch their first state title.
Leading scorer Kyndal Haroski, a sophomore shooting guard, expressed her admiration for Trickett’s relentless performance, stating, “Elly doesn’t give up at all. She is a key player for us, and her energy on the court is truly inspiring. We are all focused on achieving our shared goal of winning the state championship.”
As the Warriors gear up for the ultimate showdown in the state championship game, they remain focused and driven to etch their names in Riverside High School’s history books.
