Pickens County: Child Discovers Gun Left in Gas Station Bathroom by Deputy

A shocking incident took place in Pickens County, South Carolina, when a child stumbled upon a loaded gun left behind in a gas station restroom by a deputy from the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office. The deputy, whose name has not been disclosed, is now facing consequences for the lapse in responsibility, which could have had disastrous consequences.

Incident Details

According to the incident report obtained through a Freedom of Information Act Request, the deputy entered a gas station restroom at around 9:57 p.m. on April 21. While in the stall, the deputy decided to unholster her duty weapon and placed it on the back of the toilet. The report stated that she did this to prevent the weight of the gun from pulling her belt when she unbuttoned her pants.

Due to the toilet’s automatic flushing mechanism, the deputy did not manually flush and inadvertently left her firearm behind. It wasn’t until four hours later that she realized the gun was missing and promptly reported it to a lieutenant.

Discovery and Recovery

Surveillance footage revealed that a juvenile entered the restroom shortly after the deputy left, and the child’s mother was later identified as the individual who retrieved the gun. The mother then handed the weapon to her boyfriend, who, upon realizing what he had in his possession, removed the clip and bullets, placing them in a black grocery bag before discarding it along Calhoun Memorial Highway.

Authorities retraced the route with the boyfriend and successfully recovered the firearm, averting a potential safety hazard and public threat.

Consequences and Response

Pickens County Sheriff Rick Clark expressed his disappointment in the incident, emphasizing the department’s commitment to upholding professional standards. The deputy in question received a formal reprimand, will undergo additional training, and is set to serve a three-day unpaid suspension.

The Sheriff’s Office clarified that the suspension would be served over the upcoming weekend, as determined by the deputy’s immediate supervisor to maintain adequate staffing levels during shifts. It was also noted that this was the first instance of the deputy losing a service weapon and being formally reprimanded.

Lessons Learned

This incident underscores the critical importance of maintaining strict protocols and vigilance when handling firearms, especially in public spaces. The potential consequences of such negligence could have been severe, highlighting the need for continuous training and awareness among law enforcement personnel.

Conclusion

While mistakes can happen, especially in high-pressure environments, ensuring the safety and security of weapons is paramount in law enforcement. The swift actions taken by authorities in this case helped prevent any harm or misuse of the firearm, underscoring the value of thorough investigation and responsible firearm handling.

Ultimately, this incident serves as a timely reminder of the critical role that law enforcement officers play in upholding public safety and the importance of adherence to established protocols to prevent such incidents from reoccurring.
