Compass of Carolina: Making a Difference in Greenville

Greenville, South Carolina, is home to a beacon of hope and support for individuals and families in need – Compass of Carolina. Established in 1919, this organization has a rich history of serving the Upstate community through various programs aimed at promoting mental health, family well-being, and financial stability. With a dedicated team of 17 employees and a wide range of services, Compass of Carolina continues to be a guiding light for those facing challenges in their lives.

Mission and Services

Compass of Carolina, formerly known as Greenacres and the Juvenile Protection Association, has evolved over its 105-year history to become a cornerstone of support for the Upstate region. The organization offers three core services: mental health counseling, family violence intervention, and representative payee services. These services are designed to provide trauma-informed therapy, support for domestic violence survivors, and financial management assistance for individuals with disabilities.

With a focus on inclusivity and accessibility, Compass of Carolina offers counseling in English and Spanish, as well as in-person and telehealth group sessions. The organization’s goal is to empower individuals and families to overcome challenges and build a brighter future for themselves.

Giving Opportunities

Compass of Carolina relies on the support of volunteers and donors to sustain its mission of helping those in need. Volunteers are needed for various tasks, including clerical duties, fundraising, event preparation, and facility maintenance. Donors’ contributions at all levels make a difference in the lives of thousands of people served by the organization.

From supporting a truant student through the Second Chance curriculum to sponsoring a victim of domestic violence in a psychoeducational program, every donation to Compass of Carolina has a direct impact on the community. The organization also hosts fundraising events like the annual Hopefall Gathering and benefits from community events such as the BMW Charity Pro-Am.

Impact and Results

Compass of Carolina’s efforts have led to tangible results in the Upstate community. With sliding-scale fees for counseling, over 1,100 individuals received mental health support in 2023. Programs focusing on anger management and batterer intervention saw a 3% decrease in recidivism rates, while victims of domestic violence reported improvements in their quality of life.

The Representative Payee Program has also been instrumental in helping over 300 participants achieve financial stability, ensuring they can meet their basic needs and maintain housing. These outcomes speak to the vital role Compass of Carolina plays in breaking cycles of abuse and providing stability for those in crisis.

Leadership and Funding

Under the leadership of Executive Director Laurie Rovin and Director of Program Operations Harold Mayes, Compass of Carolina is guided by a dedicated Board of Directors. The organization receives funding from a variety of sources, including program fees, grants, and fundraising efforts.

With a commitment to serving the community and empowering individuals to thrive, Compass of Carolina continues to be a force for good in Greenville and beyond.
