Greenville Shines Spotlight on New Play This September

Greenville, South Carolina, is buzzing with excitement as it gears up for the world premiere of Ashley Wettlin’s latest creation, “…And Getting Caught in the Rain”. This fresh, engaging play will take center stage at Centre Stage from September 26 to 29, and it promises to be a delightful blend of humor and heartfelt moments.

A Canceled Flight Sparks Inspiration

It’s amazing how a simple delay can lead to something spectacular! Wettlin, now 24, was inspired to write her first full-length play while stranded alone in the Charlotte airport a few years ago. As she waited for a later flight, her imagination took flight, envisioning the journey of two very different characters trying to make their way to New York City on New Year’s Eve. “I had a lot of time to think in that airport,” Wettlin humorously recalled.

Meet Tilly and Barney

The play introduces audiences to two characters, Tilly and Barney, who come from completely different backgrounds and ages. Tilly is a spirited twenty-something, while Barney has decades of life experience behind him. They might seem like an unlikely pair at first, but as their adventure unfolds, they discover common ground, notably their shared enjoyment of Rupert Holmes’ classic 1979 hit, “Escape”, also known as “The Pina Colada Song.” In fact, a familiar line from this catchy tune inspired the play’s title!

A “Dramedy” with Heart

Wettlin describes her work as a “dramedy,” a unique mix of both comedy and drama that explores the beauty of unexpected friendships across generations. “They meet each other halfway,” she said, emphasizing her belief that age differences shouldn’t prevent people from forming meaningful connections. “Growing up in the South, I always felt there was such a gap between younger and older folks.”

While politics often underscores generational divides, Wettlin’s play seeks to illuminate broader commonalities. “We really aren’t that different,” she argues, aiming to break down barriers and showcase the inherent humor found in life’s challenges.

Audience Love and Anticipation

The initial reading of “…And Getting Caught in the Rain” at Centre Stage back in 2022 was met with warm enthusiasm. David Veatch, the producer of the New Play Festival, stated, “It’s a very funny play with characters you root for. It’s got elements of both a romantic comedy and a buddy comedy in a really fun story.” The audience connected with the humor and heart of the play, showcasing its potential impact as it takes to the stage for its premiere.

A Bright Future for Wettlin

Wettlin’s journey is one that many can relate to. After attending Mauldin High School and the Greenville County Schools Fine Arts Center, she has pursued her dreams vigorously. Now based in New York City, she wears many hats as an actor, playwright, and singer-songwriter. Alongside her creative endeavors, she also manages a facial business and runs her own company, Just a Girl Productions, which promotes local talent through tribute concerts to popular artists.
