New Middle School Planned for Greenville County by 2027
Travelers Rest, S.C. – Greenville County is set to welcome a new middle school, as plans have been announced for a significant upgrade to education in the area. The new facility is scheduled to open in August 2027.
Officials have purchased nearly 30 acres of property along Highway 25 to replace the current Northwest Middle School, which has been serving students since it opened in 1973. Although the school underwent renovations in 1998, it has reached a point where a brand new building is necessary, according to Scott Carlin, Executive Director of Facilities for the Greenville County School District.
Currently, Northwest Middle can accommodate around 800 students, but the new school is designed to hold approximately 1,000 students. The district maintains that this move will help in meeting the educational needs of the community better. “There are two things the consultants looked at: the educational adequacy and the physical condition of the school,” Carlin explained.
The location of the new middle school is approximately 10 minutes away from the existing facility, to be situated near Belvue and Robertson Roads. This decision received mixed reactions from local residents. Kassie Quinn, a local employee whose family has attended Northwest, expressed excitement about the rebuild. “It is definitely old and definitely needs to be redone,” she remarked. However, she raised concerns about the road being narrow, suggesting that traffic could become an issue.
To ease traffic flow, Carlin mentioned there will be improvements to the surrounding roads in compliance with SCDOT requirements. As part of the project, officials plan to enhance car lines and bus routes associated with the school.
In summary, the Greenville County School District is enthusiastic about this new project, viewing it as a great opportunity to provide a more modern and effective learning environment for students. “This is just going to bring this existing school up to par with what everyone else enjoys in Greenville County,” said Carlin.
