Travelers Rest, S.C. – Greenville County is gearing up for a significant upgrade in its education facilities as plans roll out for a brand new middle school. The new Northwest Middle School is scheduled to open in August 2027, replacing the current Northwest Middle School, which has been in service since 1973.
The Greenville County School District has acquired nearly 30 acres of land along Highway 25 for this new school, which will accommodate around 1,000 students. This new location is situated about ten minutes from the current school, and officials believe it will offer a better learning environment for the local community.
Scott Carlin, the Executive Director of Facilities for the school district, emphasized the need for a modern facility, mentioning that consultants evaluated the school’s educational adequacy and overall physical condition. “Building a new school is a top priority,” he stated, reflecting the district’s commitment to providing high-quality educational spaces.
The decision to move forward with the new school comes after extensive renovations were made to the existing Northwest Middle School in 1998. Carlin pointed out that the community’s needs have evolved, necessitating this significant change.
Nearby residents are already discussing potential impacts on daily traffic. Kassie Quinn, an employee who has ties to the current school, expressed enthusiasm about the new building but noted possible traffic issues stemming from the new location. “It’s a very skinny road,” she remarked about Belvue Road, where part of the traffic will be routed.
To address these concerns, Carlin assured that the school’s entrance will be strategically placed off Robertson Road and that there will be improvements made to traffic areas in collaboration with the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT).
With the excitement of a new facility, local officials see the new Northwest Middle School as an excellent opportunity to elevate educational standards and experiences for students in Greenville County.
