Interview with a Shining Star: The Lion King’s Mukelisiwe Goba
Greenville, S.C. – The theatrical wonder of The Lion King is soon to grace the city of Greenville, anticipated to deliver stunning performances throughout September 2024. A noteworthy presence in this acclaimed touring production is Mukelisiwe Goba, the soulful embodiment of the wise, playful, and profound character, Rafiki.
The Consistent Spark in The Lion King’s Flame
Mukelisiwe Goba, native to South Africa, was first noticed in her ensemble role in The Lion King over ten years ago. Her talent, grasping portrayal of the characters, and resonant voice soon won her the role of Rafiki.
The role of Rafiki, one densely layered with wisdom, humour, emotional depth, and traditional shamanic elements, is one Goba took on with promising dedication. “The role isn’t an easy one”, admits Goba, “but I try my best to make sure that when people leave the theater, they understand Rafiki.”
Preparation for the King’s Court
Essential for a performer to uphold such demanding responsibilities is maintaining optimum physical and mental well-being. Goba takes painstaking care in preparing herself each day for the role. Her daily routine commences at 11 a.m. with a session at the gym, followed by stretching and voice warm-ups. Once at the theater, half an hour is devoted to getting into character with makeup, after which she kneads out any tension with another stretch and joins her fellow cast members for a motivational gathering of prayer.
Moments of Solitude on Stage
Reflecting the profound spirituality that her character embodies on stage, Goba also shares a unique ritual of spending a few solitary minutes on stage for personal prayer before the curtains rise. “I don’t need anybody there. They know,” says Goba, her reference to her fellow cast members. “I just need to be alone and then pray before we start.”
The Timeless Appeal of The Lion King
When asked what elements of The Lion King resonate with audiences over the decades, Goba believes that the captivating music and universal storyline play a massive role. “The drums and the storyline, this show resonates with everyone’s lifestyle,” she says, further emphasising the show’s power to transcend age and lifestyle boundaries.
The Lion King graces the Peace Center in downtown Greenville from September 11 through September 29, 2024. Theater enthusiasts and fans of the show brace themselves for a re-experiencing of a modern classic, as they wait to witness and appreciate Mukelisiwe Goba’s enigmatic performance as Rafiki.
