Spartanburg Bids Farewell to a Meal Delivery Legend
SPARTANBURG — It’s a bittersweet day in the charming community of Spartanburg County as beloved volunteer Dave Collins hangs up his meal delivery hat after an incredible 42 years! A true local hero, Dave has become synonymous with Mobile Meals of Spartanburg, delivering meals and smiles to homebound residents throughout his route. At 82, he’s reluctantly stepped back, but the impact of his service will be felt for years to come.
A Journey of Service
Dave Collins and his lovely wife, Jean, made their way to Spartanburg from Boston in 1966. Eager to get involved in their new community, they quickly found ways to lend a hand. In 1982, Dave embarked on a journey that would change his life, volunteering with Mobile Meals of Spartanburg. Little did he know that this endeavor would extend well into his golden years, becoming a cherished routine filled with personal connections.
Interacting with the Community
As the decades rolled on, Dave became a friendly face in neighborhoods like Roebuck and Walnut Grove. For him, every delivery was more than just dropping off a meal: it was an opportunity to bond with residents, hear their stories, and brighten their day. “I will miss seeing all the people,” Collins expressed with a hint of nostalgia in his voice. He even had moments of compassion where he’d help a gentleman put on or take off his socks when he made his deliveries. It’s these little acts of kindness that truly made a difference.
A Partnership in Service
In 2009, when Dave retired from his day job, Jean joined him in the heartwarming mission of delivering meals. Together, they brought joy not just through the meals, but through their presence and love. Their commitment meant they’d often go the extra mile—literally! If there was ever a shortage, Dave would hop into his car, racing to a nearby restaurant to ensure no one went hungry. “You find out quick delivering meals—you learn a lot about the neighborhood you are delivering to,” he said, reflecting on the relationships he built over the years.
Developments in Meal Delivery
Over the past four decades, Dave witnessed the evolution of Mobile Meals. From aluminum trays covered with cardboard to today’s modern, sealed-wrapped containers, the improvements reflect a deep commitment to quality and care. “We deliver more than 1,300 meals a day,” notes the new CEO, Laura Boles, who took over the organization earlier this year. She is determined to keep expanding the service, especially as demand grows for rural deliveries throughout Spartanburg County.
What’s Next for Dave?
While Dave has stepped back from his weekly routine for health reasons, he hopes to pop back in occasionally, stating, “It will take time to adjust to my new routine.” The sense of family he formed with the community, the stories shared, and the warmth of their smiles will always hold a special place in his heart. Each meal represented a connection, a shared moment between him and the recipients. “I didn’t realize all the connections I made,” Collins pointed out, showcasing how deeply he values the relationships built through volunteering.
