Mauldin, SC – February 25, 2024

Defending state champions, the Mauldin High School girls basketball team, continues to showcase their resilience and determination in the playoffs despite facing numerous challenges. Losing key players to transfers for the third consecutive year, the Mavericks have defied the odds and secured a spot in the Upper State semifinals.

Overcoming Adversity

Despite the departure of standout players like Zara Leamon, Mauldin’s leading scorer, the team under the guidance of Coach Angel McGowan has maintained their winning momentum. With a current record of 17-1, the Mavericks displayed their strength by defeating Dorman 61-41 in the second round of the Class AAAAA playoffs.

Team Unity and Stellar Performances

Leamon, along with Delilah Soltys, has taken on the responsibility of leading the team both on and off the court. Their stellar performances and offensive prowess have been crucial in Mauldin’s success this season. Both players have garnered attention from Division I programs due to their exceptional skills and teamwork.

Rising Stars and Collective Effort

With rising stars like Imani McIver and Jazaria Jones stepping up alongside Leamon and Soltys, Mauldin has showcased the depth of their roster. The team’s chemistry and resilience have been instrumental in their 10-game winning streak and impressive playoff run.

A Bright Future

As the Mavericks gear up to face Rock Hill in the Upper State semifinals, their journey reflects the essence of teamwork, perseverance, and unwavering spirit. Despite facing setbacks and roster changes, Mauldin High School remains a force to be reckoned with in South Carolina high school basketball.
