If you’re in Greenville, you’re going to want to stop by the unique and welcoming Lonely Hound Guitar Co. Located off Laurens Road on Shoppers Drive, right across from the cozy Liberty Café, this shop is a hidden gem for music lovers and hair care enthusiasts alike. Why, you may wonder? Well, enter the store, and you might feel a moment of delightful bewilderment as you take in a dazzling display of nearly 30 vintage and used guitars and basses, lining the walls. For anyone who has a passion for electric guitars, it’s like walking into a candy store!
But here’s where it gets even more interesting. To the left of all those beautiful guitars, you’ll find the Sum Girls Salon, which shares the same inviting space. This quirky setup makes perfect sense, as the guitar shop is run by musician Chris Hall, while his wife, Cat, manages the salon. “My wife and I had been talking for a few years about opening a hair salon,” Hall shares. “When I found this spot, the location was perfect, and the layout of the building was perfect. I just had this idea that I could do a guitar shop and a hair salon in the same building, and it would be super cool.”
And “super cool” it is! Lonely Hound Guitar Co. has been bringing joy to customers since it opened its doors almost a year ago. Initially, Hall sold a large portion of his personal collection, gathered over two decades of playing and touring in various bands. “I just love guitars. I love having guitars around, and I’m always on the road,” he explains. Indeed, many of the guitars hanging in the shop made their way home with him from places like Chicago, Atlanta, or Nashville.
As it turns out, Lonely Hound Guitar Co. isn’t just growing in inventory; it’s becoming a vibrant part of the local music scene. Hall mentions that the shop is gearing up to unveil a new collection of recently acquired guitars, some of which came through trades. “We love being beside Pharmacy Records,” he says, clearly enthusiastic about the neighboring businesses. “They’re good friends of mine, and we fit right in. We’re perfect neighbors.” With both a record store and a guitar shop in close proximity, musicians can readily satisfy their cravings for both vinyl and instruments.
Excitement is in the air as the salon and guitar shop plan a collaborative event in early October that promises to bring more engaging specials to their customers. However, until then, Hall seems more than content to greet visitors with a smile, engaging with customers, and admiring the impressive wall of guitars that surrounds him. “A lot of guitar players like myself probably have a dream that one day they’ll work with guitars,” he reflects. “And that’s just something I always thought would be neat.”
