What is OLLI All About?

Launched in 1993 as the Furman University Learning in Retirement, OLLI began its journey with only seven classes and a modest group of 62 members. Fast forward to the 2019-2020 academic year, and now we’re talking about a marvelous community of 2,600 members participating in a grand total of 125 classes across three terms: fall, winter, and spring. Now that’s growth!

Unlike traditional college programs, OLLI has a relaxed atmosphere—there are no grades, no pressure for college credits, and definitely no stress involved. Instead, it’s all about having fun, exploring new interests, and meeting people.

Meet the Team Behind OLLI

Guided by Nancy Kennedy, who took the reins as Director in 2014, OLLI is run by a dedicated team of five and a half staff members. With four full-time and one part-time employee, they work tirelessly to provide meaningful experiences for the community. The real backbone of the program, however, lies in its 800 active volunteers who share their time and talents out of pure passion.

OLLI’s Resilience During the Pandemic

When the pandemic hit, OLLI didn’t let that slow them down. The staff and volunteers quickly got to work, assisting about 1,300 members with the transition to Zoom classes. Keeping the spirit of learning alive, OLLI now offers classes in-person, through Zoom, and even in blended formats.

A Diverse Range of Class Offerings

There’s truly something for everyone at OLLI! With classes catering to various interests, from academic courses to arts and social interactions, participants can dive into subjects such as photography, current events, languages, and so much more. And don’t forget about the exciting “Bonus Events” on Fridays, offering fun tours, wine tastings, or intriguing lectures.

The ever-popular “Lunch and Learn” sessions are a hit, too! These free events are open to the public every Tuesday and cover a plethora of subjects. Newcomers to the Greenville area find OLLI especially beneficial for building community connections and discovering friendships.

A Self-Sustaining Program

Interestingly, OLLI operates on a self-sustaining model funded through membership fees, class fees, volunteer efforts, and generous grants from the Bernard Osher Foundation, totaling over $2.2 million. The name change to OLLI took place in 2008, marking a new chapter reflecting its growth and partnership with the Osher Foundation.

The program has rebounded impressively post-pandemic, with nearly 1,900 members enjoying the array of offerings this year! For those interested, the annual membership fee is just $65, which also includes a parking sticker and unlimited coffee—what a bargain! Classes are typically held once a week for about 90 minutes and cost around $55. There are even four-week summer classes available at a steal of $35!

As the fall term is set to kick off after Labor Day, the anticipation builds. You can expect the fall 2022 class schedule to be live online on July 22, and that’s followed by a brochure in mailboxes the very next day. Scholarships for class fees are also available upon request, making it easy for anyone to participate.
