It’s been two weeks since Hurricane Helene made its presence felt, and for many customers in Upstate South Carolina, the storm’s aftermath continues to bring challenges. The once-bustling connection to the online world has been silenced for over 50,000 Spectrum customers, leaving them without internet services that have become so essential in our daily lives.
Scott Pryzwansky, the senior director for Spectrum’s mid-south region at Charter Communications, shared some staggering numbers about the storm’s immediate impact. At its worst, a whopping 1.2 million customers across Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina found themselves in the dark—figuratively speaking, as internet service went down. The heart of this storm’s wrath was notably felt in South Carolina, where 395,000 customers were offline at the peak of the chaos.
In Upstate South Carolina, the two counties that took a significant hit were Greenville and Spartanburg. As of Friday afternoon, reports showed that 38,762 customers remained without service in Greenville County alone, while 20,616 faced similar outages in Spartanburg County. Anderson and Pickens Counties were not spared either, with 11,101 and 5,559 customers respectively still waiting for their connections to be restored.
But it’s not all gloom and doom! Crawl though the remains of this natural disaster, and you’ll see the brave faces of more than 100 technicians and engineers working tirelessly across the Upstate to restore internet service. They have been busy repairing over 188 miles of damaged network infrastructure.
Pryzwansky reassured the community with a positive note, stating, “Our crews are immediately following local utility teams as they complete their work.” It’s a coordinated effort to get everything back up and running. They are keeping a close eye on conditions and promise to complete restoration to the remaining communities as quickly as they can.
Despite the disruptions, the community’s spirit has shined through. Local events like the Carolina Cares fundraiser at Papi’s Tacos have brought residents together to support storm relief efforts, raising an impressive $16,000 for those affected.
A neighbor helping a neighbor seems to be the prevailing theme in these challenging times. Many residents are sharing resources, lending a hand to those less fortunate, and maintaining hope as they await the return of their internet services. It’s a reminder of the importance of community solidarity as we all find our footing in this recovering phase.
