Holiday Relief Initiative Launched in Henderson County, NC to Support Families Affected by Hurricane Helene

Holiday Relief Effort in Henderson County, NC: Join the Cause!

Henderson County, NC, is gearing up for a heartwarming holiday relief effort aimed at helping families in need following the devastating effects of Hurricane Helene. With the holiday season right around the corner, local organizations are teaming up to provide much-needed support to those impacted in the region, particularly the students of North Henderson High School and Apple Valley Middle School.

What Happened?

Earlier this fall, Hurricane Helene swept through the northern and eastern parts of Henderson County, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The storm’s impact has been severe, especially for communities such as Bat Cave, Gerton, Chimney Rock, and Edneyville. Many families are struggling to get back on their feet, and as the holiday season approaches, it’s more important than ever to rally together and provide assistance.

Joining Forces for “Blessings in Boxes”

In an effort to lighten the load on these families, Kidding Around Greenville has joined forces with Mom to Mom to organize a special holiday initiative known as “Blessings in Boxes.” This collaboration aims to ensure that students have access to the essentials they need, as well as some well-deserved holiday cheer.

For those unfamiliar with the program, “Blessings in Boxes” is an initiative run by Henderson County Schools and The Storehouse, a local non-profit organization. Last year, they assisted 702 families, reaching out to a total of 2,005 children. However, with the aftermath of the hurricane, they now have over 975 families to support, which adds up to more than 3,000 children—a staggering number that is still growing!

How Can You Help?

This year, community involvement is vital. In addition to the families already served, further support is crucial since communities were heavily impacted. The good news? There are many ways you can pitch in! Local businesses and community groups are encouraged to become sponsors for groups of children. This can include purchasing gifts based on specific needs and wants provided by parents through forms filled out for each child.

The needs of the children vary widely, including essential items like clothing, shoes, and accessories, as well as fun items like toys and games. Parents typically request around $50 to $150 worth of items to fulfill a child’s list, allowing for a mix of necessity and enjoyment. The best part? Each item picked from the wish list is taken off the list immediately when it’s purchased, so you can see the tangible impact of your help!

Key Dates to Remember

Mark your calendars! Here are some important dates to keep in mind:

  • Saturday, November 16: Pick up materials for sponsor children.
  • Saturday & Sunday, December 7 and 8: Drop off filled boxes.
  • December 13 and 14: Gift pick-up dates for parents in Hendersonville.

If you are local to Greenville and want to get involved further, there will be plenty of volunteer opportunities available. If you’re outside the area, don’t worry! You can shop off the two Amazon wish lists created specifically for this initiative. Just remember, children typically ask for practical items like clothes and coats, as well as a little fun!

Get Involved Today!

If you’re interested in helping and want to fill a child’s wish list, please feel free to reach out. You can email NCmom2mom@gmail.com for more information or fill out a volunteer interest form to join the effort. Every little bit helps and can truly make a difference for children in need this holiday season. Let’s come together as a community and sprinkle some joy on those who need it most!
