Hampton Station Meadery Wandering Bard to Close in the Fall

The Wandering Bard Meadery, located in Greenville’s City View neighborhood, announced on social media its plans to close this fall. The meadery, known for its unique and delicious mead creations, will have its last day fully open to the public on November 3.

Founded by uncle-and-nephew duo Adam and Brian Daughhetee, Wandering Bard Meadery first opened its doors in 2017 as a production facility in Mauldin. In 2020, they relocated to Hampton Station to expand their operations and reach a wider audience.

Mead, an alcoholic beverage made from fermented honey and yeast, has gained popularity in recent years. Wandering Bard Meadery became known for its innovative flavors and high-quality ingredients.

The decision to close the meadery was influenced by the founders’ desire to take a break from the industry and avoid burnout. Adam Daughhetee explained, “We’re both kind of like, a little burned out from the industry right now. But we both love it so we’re trying to find that sweet spot where we can still do it and enjoy it, but not have the burnout.”

In their social media post, the Daughhetees made it clear that the closure was not due to liquor liability insurance costs, but rather a personal decision to step away temporarily. The brothers have backgrounds in IT and initially moved to the Upstate to work together in Brian’s IT business, ANC Group.

Wandering Bard Meadery has been a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, attracting visitors with its inviting atmosphere and wide selection of mead. Located in Hampton Station at 1320 Hampton Ave. Ext., Suite 3, the meadery has left a lasting impression on the community.

While the closure of Wandering Bard Meadery will be a loss for the local craft beverage scene, it is not uncommon for businesses to reevaluate their priorities and take a step back to recharge. The meadery’s loyal customers have expressed their support and gratitude for the unique experience and exceptional mead that Wandering Bard provided over the years.

As the fall season approaches, the founders are optimistic about their future plans. They intend to take this time to rest, rejuvenate, and explore other opportunities. Although they did not provide specifics, they hinted at the possibility of returning to the mead industry in the future, possibly with new ideas and concepts.

News of the meadery’s closure has sparked conversations about the challenges facing the craft beverage industry. Many small breweries, wineries, and meaderies face significant operational costs, including licensing fees, ingredient expenses, and distribution challenges. It is essential for these businesses to maintain a delicate balance between passion for the craft and sustainable business practices.

Fortunately, the Upstate region is home to numerous craft beverage establishments that continue to thrive and innovate. Wandering Bard Meadery’s closure serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting local businesses and exploring the diverse offerings in the area.

As November 3 draws closer, the founders of Wandering Bard Meadery invite their loyal customers and the community to visit their establishment one last time. The meadery’s closure will be a bittersweet moment, filled with nostalgia and appreciation for the impact they have made on the local craft beverage scene.

Although the meadery’s doors will be closing for now, the legacy of Wandering Bard Meadery will live on in the memories of its patrons. The founders’ commitment to quality, creativity, and community has made a lasting impression and will undoubtedly be remembered fondly.

As the craft beverage industry continues to evolve and adapt, it is not uncommon for establishments to come and go. However, the impact and memories they leave behind become part of the vibrant tapestry of the local community.

For now, Greenville will say farewell to Wandering Bard Meadery, cherishing the memories and hoping for their eventual return. The meadery’s announcement is a reminder to support local businesses, explore new flavors, and celebrate the unique experiences that these establishments bring to the community.
