Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer Denies Involvement in VP Vetting Process for Kamala Harris

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer Disassociates Herself from VP Vetting for Kamala Harris

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer stated categorically that she is “not a part of the vetting process” for the selection of a running mate for Vice President Kamala Harris. This statement comes amidst speculation of the possibility of her being on the ticket.

Whitmer to Remain Governor of Michigan

The Governor reiterated her commitment to continue serving the people of Michigan throughout her term which ends in 2026. Whitmer’s name had surfaced among potential candidates for the vice president slot prior to President Biden opting out of the race and endorsing Harris. The Governor has since reassured everyone, including Michigan’s citizenry, that her role in the upcoming election will not change.

Despite the gossip surrounding her potential VP nomination, Whitmer has shown determination in quelling discussions linking her to the position. She has insisted that she’s focused on working as an effective ally for the Democratic party in her home state.

Whitmer’s Position on the VP Selection

Gov. Whitmer stated that she expects the vice-presidential pick to be made within a week. She praised the diversity of the current pool of candidates being considered for the vice-presidential nomination. In her opinion: “Harris has a great group of people from whom she’s going to pick her running mate”.

“Every one of us was told there may be too many women on the ticket,” Whitmer commented when asked about the suggestion that Harris needs to select a male running mate. “Baloney. We’ve proved that wrong in the swingingest of swing states.” The Governor mentioned that the top executive posts of the Michigan government are currently held by women, repudiating the notion that it isn’t feasible to have a majority female ticket.

Democratic Optimism Ahead of Convention

As the Democratic party prepares for the roll call vote to designate the nominee ahead of the Democratic National Convention, Whitmer expects a “convention of happy warriors”. She predicts a buoyant mood as wariness gives way to exuberance since Harris rose as the frontrunner of the ticket.

The Governor recounted the surge of excitement and enthusiasm she has observed and anticipates this energy to translate to an engaging and monumental Democratic National Convention. “People are wanting to be a part of this moment and see the opportunity,” said Whitmer

Whitmer’s Role in Harris’s Campaign

Whitmer’s focus as a co-chair of Harris’s campaign is preparing for the convention. She aims to present a compelling vision of a Harris administration that assures people of “your life’s gonna get better.” Whitmer believes that Harris has the problem-solving skill and drive required to effect significant change. She anticipates a more robust communication strategy to replace the absence of a national television ad campaign so far.

The campaign has shown promising potential in the wake of Harris’s entry into the race. The election remains high stakes for the Democratic party with Whitmer noting that it will likely go “down to the wire.” However, the Governor emphasized the unity of Democrats and their collective commitment to uplift each other and find joy in working for the betterment of the American people.
