Greer’s Community Spirit Shines Bright with New Habitat for Humanity Build
In the charming city of Greer, something special is brewing! Recently, volunteers from BMW Manufacturing gathered to kick off a new Habitat for Humanity home on Ruddy Creek Circle, marking a significant milestone in the journey towards affordable housing. The event, known as a “wall raising,” is the first big step in building a home that will not only provide shelter but also create a sense of community for the future residents.
Building More Than Just Walls
Monroe Free, the CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County, beautifully described the wall raising as a moment for everyone involved to unite. “It’s a time to recognize the hard work that goes into building affordable housing,” he said, emphasizing that it’s about more than just bricks and mortar. This event symbolizes the cooperation of dedicated volunteers and the family who will soon call this house a home. Over the upcoming months, these smiling faces will come together to hang drywall, hammer nails, and add those final touches with paint.
Partners in Community
Having community partners like BMW is crucial for Habitat for Humanity’s mission, according to Raymond T. Davis, CEO of Habitat Spartanburg. “We look forward to fulfilling our mission by sparking generational change and transforming our communities,” Davis expressed with enthusiasm. Max Metcalf, BMW Manufacturing’s Manager of Government and Community Relations, chimed in, “The mission of Habitat aligns with our commitment to making a lasting impact through teamwork, service and stewardship.” It’s all about working together to bring hope and opportunity to those in need.
The Homeowner Program: A Pathway to Ownership
It’s important to note that the families who will live in these homes actually buy them! Contrary to what some might believe, these houses aren’t handed out for free. Free explained that Habitat’s homeowner program focuses on making sure prospective homeowners are well-prepared. This includes courses on personal finance, budgeting, mortgages, and even home maintenance. Plus, families must contribute 200 hours of volunteer service to Habitat, ensuring they become invested in their new community from the get-go.
More Homes, More Hope
As of October, Habitat Greenville has proudly completed over 410 homes, while Habitat Spartanburg is not far behind with 156 homes finished. Both organizations are dedicated to improving the communities they serve through building homes in areas like Spartanburg, Boiling Springs, Chesnee, Greer, and Inman. Interested community members can support these initiatives through their local ReStores, where donations are always appreciated.
