Greer Woman Accused of Exploiting Assisted Living Facility Resident Arrested

GREER, S.C. – The South Carolina Attorney General’s office announced the arrest of a woman accused of stealing from a vulnerable adult residing in an assisted living facility in Greenville County.

The suspect, identified as 51-year-old Christa Porter Bennett, was apprehended after an investigation conducted by the Vulnerable Adults and Medicaid Provider Fraud unit (VAMPF) unearthed alleged financial misconduct spanning from June 2022 to December 2023. Bennett, who held the position of the victim’s conservator, reportedly misused funds and assets valued between $2,000 and $10,000 for personal gain.

Allegations Revealed

The victim, a resident at The Residences at Greer, an assisted living facility, fell under Bennett’s care during the period in question. The facility raised concerns about Bennett’s activities, prompting the VAMPF unit to launch a thorough investigation into the matter.

Charges and Consequences

As a result of the investigation, Bennett now faces charges of exploitation of a vulnerable adult and breach of trust with fraudulent intent, involving a value exceeding $2,000 but not surpassing $10,000. Following her arrest on June 28, Bennett was taken into custody at the Greenville County Detention Center.

If convicted of exploitation of a vulnerable adult, Bennett could face a maximum sentence of five years in prison, a fine of up to $5,000, or both. Similarly, the breach of trust charge carries a penalty of up to five years of incarceration or a court-imposed fine.

Legal Ramifications

Exploiting vulnerable individuals, particularly those in assisted living facilities, is a serious offense that can have detrimental effects on the victims. Authorities emphasize the importance of holding accountable those who breach the trust placed in them, especially when it comes to the financial well-being of vulnerable adults.

Conclusion

The arrest of Christa Porter Bennett serves as a reminder of the legal safeguards in place to protect vulnerable members of society. The diligence of the VAMPF unit and the swift action taken by law enforcement highlight the commitment to upholding justice and ensuring the safety and security of individuals in care facilities.
