Greer Approves Fiber Internet Expansion: City Council Notes

Franchise Agreement with Lumos Fiber of South Carolina

The city council of Greer, South Carolina has given final approval to a franchise agreement with Lumos Fiber of South Carolina LLC. The utility provider has plans to install its fiber infrastructure throughout the city, starting in late summer. Lumos Fiber has already installed its fiber network in Columbia and Lexington and has franchise agreements in Spartanburg and Cowpens. The company also intends to expand its network into Travelers Rest.

New Subdivision Rezoning

During the meeting, the council also granted initial approval to rezone 39.44 acres adjacent to the Chestnut Grove subdivision on Kist Road. The property will be developed by Seamon, Whiteside & Associates Inc. as a new subdivision consisting of 92 to 97 single-family homes. The final approval for this rezoning will be voted on by the City Council on May 14.

Updates to the City’s Unified Development Ordinance

The council also gave initial approval to amend the city’s unified development ordinance. If approved, the updates will include:

  • Adding a definition for commercial vehicles
  • Updating where vehicle sales and rentals are allowed and restricting them to more auto-oriented zoning districts
  • Updating allowances for electronic message signs
  • Removing landscaping requirements for monument signs
  • Adding spacing requirements for plantings

This expansion of fiber internet infrastructure in Greer will bring significant benefits to the community.
