Greenville’s New Budget Includes Investment in Neighborhood Improvements

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The city council of Greenville, South Carolina, unanimously approved the new budget this week, which includes significant investments in neighborhood improvements. The budget, with a total of $275 million, focuses on infrastructure, public safety, open space, and affordable housing, among other priorities outlined during the State of the City Address.

Addressing the Needs of Neighborhoods

City Manager Shannon Lavrin emphasized that the budget is centered around the needs and priorities of the people. Inez Morris, a resident and neighborhood leader in West Greenville, expressed her hope that the budget would address issues like affordable housing. She noted the changes that have occurred in West Greenville over the past two years, with new developments catering primarily to higher-income populations.

Morris stated, “Unfortunately, it’s not development that serves affordability, but it serves a different population. Houses are being sold anywhere from half a million to a million dollars.” This highlights the pressing need for affordable housing options in Greenville.

Affordable Housing and Workforce Housing Investments

In response to the demand for affordable housing, the new budget allocates $2.5 million specifically for affordable housing initiatives. It also includes $1 million for workforce housing, acknowledging the importance of providing housing options for all income levels in the community.

Another significant investment in neighborhoods is the allocation of $150,000 to support homeless services, demonstrating the city’s commitment to addressing the issue of homelessness and providing assistance to those in need.

Improving Infrastructure and Neighborhood Facilities

The budget also prioritizes infrastructure enhancements and improvements to neighborhood facilities. The city has earmarked $4 million for the addition of sidewalks, enhancing pedestrian safety and accessibility in various neighborhoods across Greenville.

Furthermore, the budget includes another round of the $18 million neighborhood infrastructure bond, which can be utilized for paving, the creation of bike lanes, and the development of community centers. West Greenville, for example, hopes to benefit from this funding allocation by renovating and upgrading community centers, including addressing issues such as leaky roofs and outdated bathrooms.

The city also plans to update neighborhood master plans and establish a storefront center where residents can meet with planners. This initiative aims to proactively engage the community in the planning, designing, and creation of their own neighborhoods, promoting a sense of ownership and collaboration.

Meeting Community Needs

The residents of Greenville have been advocating for affordable housing options for years. The inclusion of significant funding for affordable and workforce housing in the budget is a positive step forward in addressing this pressing issue.

Inez Morris expressed her hope that the city council will follow through on their promises and ensure that positive change outweighs any negative concerns. She stated, “I know it’s a process, and I know it’s going to take time, but I’m glad that affordable housing is in there, transportation is in there, and just making sure our neighborhoods continue to thrive.”

Final Thoughts

Greenville’s new budget reflects the city’s commitment to meeting the needs of its residents and improving the quality of life in its neighborhoods. With investments in affordable housing, infrastructure enhancements, and neighborhood facilities, the budget sets a positive precedent for inclusive and sustainable development. The city council’s unanimous approval demonstrates a unified commitment to the well-being and prosperity of Greenville and its residents.
