An artistic depiction of the new expansion plans for Greenville Zoo.
The Greenville City Council has approved a $50 million expansion for the Greenville Zoo, allowing for new habitats and improved visitor facilities. This multi-year plan includes the addition of a new tiger habitat, expanded giraffe barn, and an upgraded entry pavilion. Family-friendly attractions and conservation initiatives are also key components of this ambitious project. With a commitment to enhancing the zoo experience and supporting conservation efforts, this expansion is set to elevate the beloved attraction to new heights.
In a thrilling move that promises to bring new life and excitement to the beloved Greenville Zoo, the Greenville City Council has approved a stunning $50 million expansion plan. This decision came on March 10, 2025, and marks the beginning of an ambitious five-year strategic plan that aims to elevate the zoo experience for visitors of all ages.
The plans will unfold in stages, kicking off with a remarkable new indoor/outdoor habitat specifically designed for the whimsical orangutans. Changes do not stop there; the existing orangutan habitat will get a makeover to accommodate the lively Siamang apes. It’s all part of a broader effort to modernize the zoo and create environments that cater to the needs of these extraordinary animals.
For fans of one of the tallest animals on the planet, there are exciting updates too. The beloved giraffes will find their barn expanded, allowing more space for them to roam and interact with visitors. But that’s just the beginning!
As part of the renovations, the zoo is also set to upgrade its facilities, ensuring that visitors enjoy a comfortable experience. Expect shiny new restrooms and a dedicated baby nursing station to offer convenience for families on their day out.
One of the standout features of the expansion plan is the construction of a brand new tiger habitat. This will support the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Tiger Species Survival Plan, and will be strategically located across from a revamped entry pavilion. This habitat will not only boast a spacious outdoor area but will also incorporate an engaging water feature.
Speaking of the entry pavilion, the plans call for an impressive two-story complex. The first level will be buzzing with ticketing, member services, retail shops, and guest amenities, while the second level will treat visitors to a delightful restaurant that caters not only to zoo-goers but also welcomes Cleveland Park visitors. How convenient is that?
Families can look forward to the exciting new conservation carousel, which will feature majestic endangered species. Not only will it be fun for the kids, but the funds raised from this attraction will directly support the zoo’s conservation efforts. The zoo is also introducing Lorikeet Landing, a vibrant area where families can feed nectar to colorful lorikeets, with proceeds helping with zoo operations.
The strategic plan is ambitious—it includes the construction of a habitat for lions, designed to provide guests with up-close glass viewing, as well as new homes for black bears and red wolves. And there’s more! There is a commitment to building a new commissary, enhancing staff offices, and making infrastructure improvements like sidewalk additions and new HVAC systems.
This expansive vision doesn’t just stop at animal habitats and visitor amenities. A long-term goal includes transitioning the zoo to a public-private partnership model with a nonprofit governing board, ensuring sustainable management and a focus on conservation moving forward. To make this plan a reality, Relevant Strategies and Solutions collaborated with the zoo and city representatives to create both the strategic and master facilities plans.
After overcoming previous financial challenges and regaining accreditation, Greenville Zoo is poised to enter a new era of growth and engagement. With enhanced visitor numbers and community support on the rise, this $50 million investment is not just a facelift; it’s a commitment to educational and conservation initiatives that can resonate within the community for years to come.
The future looks bright, and animal lovers in Greenville couldn’t be more excited about what’s in store!
