Greenville is buzzing with news that a local juvenile detention center, closed for the past three years, is set to reopen its doors in 2025. The SC Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) is hard at work to breathe new life into this facility, but the journey ahead is not without its bumps.
Back in March 2022, Greenville County decided to close its juvenile detention center. The county’s officials faced a critical staff shortage at the nearby adult jail, so they had to reassign officers. It was a tough decision, but as they say, sometimes choices must be made.
This long-abandoned facility will see new action as DJJ looks for a private company to manage its operations. The contract is said to be for about $658,000 per year over the next five years, starting as early as January 1. DJJ Director Eden Hendrick emphasized that she recognizes the importance of getting this facility back up and running, but she also expressed some reservations regarding staffing.
Staffing has proven to be a common hurdle for detention centers all over the country. Hendrick remarked, “It’s hard to convince people to want to work in [juvenile detention].” It’s clear that being passionate about working with young individuals in challenging situations is crucial. People need to feel a deeper calling to take on such roles—it’s not just about the paycheck.
The good news? Hendrick believes that a private contractor may have a better chance of navigating these staffing challenges, allowing for more independent hiring and firing processes. It’s a silver lining amid the storm!
During the closure, local youth were sent to the juvenile center in Columbia, which has been notorious for overcrowding, violence, and high staff turnover. In November alone, the average daily population there was a staggering 126 youth when the facility is meant to accommodate only 72. That’s double the intended capacity! Public Defender Jennifer Coyle painted a troubling picture: “One of my clients there said they were kept in lockdown most of the day due to overcrowding.” That paints an unfortunate reality for these kids, who deserve better.
With the news of the Greenville detention center reopening, there’s a palpable sense of relief among local parents, attorneys, and law enforcement. The Greenville Police Department highlighted how much more efficient their operations would be with a facility much closer to home. “We’re very pleased to see the Juvenile Detention Center reopening here in Greenville,” said a department spokesperson. They anticipate that this change will allow officers to return to patrol duties more quickly, strengthening the service they provide to the community.
As DJJ finalizes their negotiations with a private contractor, they aim to create a safe and supportive environment for the youth. Staff training will follow a specialized curriculum approved by DJJ, ensuring that the staff is well-prepared for the unique challenges of working in juvenile detention.
Though a few hurdles remain, including the critical staffing issue, progress is being made to address the needs of the youth in the Greenville community. As we look ahead, hope springs eternal for a more efficient and effective juvenile justice system. After all, every child deserves a second chance!
So, here’s to new beginnings and a brighter future for our youth in Greenville! Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a smooth reopening in the upcoming year.
