Sponsor Our ArticlesThe Greenville City Council has prioritized trail expansions for 2025 to enhance local connectivity and recreation. Key projects include a new 2-mile connector for the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail, the establishment of Greenville’s first Wheeled-Sports Park, and upgrades to existing trails. With extensive community involvement planned, these initiatives aim to improve outdoor experiences in the city, fostering an active lifestyle for residents. Stay tuned for more updates as these ambitious plans unfold!
Hey there, Greenville residents! Buckle up, because some exciting changes are coming to your trails in 2025. The Greenville City Council recently put its trail expansions at the front of the agenda, and it’s all about making our city a better place for exercise, commuting, and just having a bit of fun while soaking in the beautiful surroundings.
Did you know that over 2.3 million people took to the popular Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail last year? That’s a lot of folks out there enjoying nature, getting active, and making the most of our lovely Greenville. With this in mind, the City Council reviewed a bunch of current and future projects during their annual retreat on February 13.
First up, we’ve got the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail Orange Line, which will feature a brand-new 2-mile connector linking the North Main neighborhood with an extension of the trail. The design process is setting off in March and will take around 18 months to wrap up, during which time the council will be looking into three different route options and gathering your thoughts!
But wait, there’s more! Planning is also underway for Greenville’s first-ever Wheeled-Sports Park. Can you picture it? A skatepark, pump track, and bicycle playground all in one! This $5 million spot will stretch across approximately 10 acres right next to Greenville Downtown Airport. Contract negotiations with a design firm will kick off soon, and community input will be crucial as the designs come together.
As for the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail Phase 1 Upgrades, a half-mile section from downtown Greenville to Unity Park is getting some much-deserved TLC. Widening the trail, installing lighting, and adding striping are all on the agenda. Five-star service for our trails, right? The design process is expected to last for nine months and begins this March!
Also on the radar is the Airport Loop Trail, a proposed 4.5-mile loop along the Greenville Downtown Airport, with studies set to be finalized soon. This project is estimated to cost around $8 million. Meanwhile, get ready for a shiny new pedestrian bridge over Verdae Boulevard, which will link the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail Green Line to a new extension heading towards Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research. That’s set to commence bidding shortly, aiming for completion in the second quarter of 2026 and will cost about $4.5 million.
But that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Exciting plans are brewing for several other trail projects—like the Laurens Road Trail Spurs, which will connect Quartier neighborhoods to the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail Greenville Line for an estimated $2.5 million. A new Zoo Trail connection could link back to Main Street with a potential cost of $3.5 million and a shared-use path on Halton Road is in the works too, connecting to the Swamp Rabbit Trail Green Line for around $2 million.
And let’s not forget the plans for the Overbrook Bike Lanes, which will redesign East North Street to include protected bike lanes at an estimated cost of just $150,000, and the Salvation Army Parallel Trail for a cozy $600,000.
It’s all very exciting, and these projects not only promise to expand our existing trails but also enhance our community connections. In a world where staying active and safe is more important than ever, these projects couldn’t come at a better time. It seems like Greenville is set to become the ultimate hotspot for outdoor enthusiasts!
So stay tuned for more details, and let’s gear up for a fun and active 2025!
