Greenville Theatre understands that the audience may want to sing along to the music in “Escape to Margaritaville.” That’s the effect Jimmy Buffett’s familiar tunes have on people.
“It’s the magic of his music,” said Max Quinlan, Greenville Theatre’s producing artistic director. “Anyone can sing it. We’re anticipating the joy of people singing along to these songs.”
You don’t have to be Parrothead to enjoy “Escape to Margaritaville,” Quinlan said.
“It’s the perfect summer musical,” Quinlan said. “Jimmy Buffett’s songs really do allow you to escape. They’re fun, playful, energetic, and romantic. You’ll feel like you’re on the beach.”
The 17-member cast will be backed by a live, onstage band. Director Ashley Robinson shared, “Jimmy Buffet’s music does that. He brings people together and celebrates humanity.”
The show is recommended for age 16 and over for mature themes and language.
With choreography by Michael Cherry, the Greenville Theatre cast is led by Jacob Seay, Jamie Ann Walters, Neel Patrick Edwards, Celia Blitzer, Stan Peal, Kristofer Parker, and Bev Clowney. Buffett, who passed away last fall, was closely involved with the original development of the musical, which ran on Broadway in 2018.
“He was extremely proud of it and for his music catalog to be part of the Broadway community,” Quinlan said.
Greenville Theatre’s staging of “Escape to Margaritaville” opens on May 30 for a four-week run through June 23. The plot revolves around a part-time bartender and singer who works at a resort on a small Caribbean island and meets and falls in love with a driven, career-minded tourist.
The 2017 jukebox musical features a collection of Buffett’s biggest tropical rock hits, including “Fins”, “Margaritaville”, “Come Monday”, and “Cheeseburger in Paradise.”
