The dental hygiene program at Greenville Technical College has received a significant boost with the recent announcement of grants from the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation. The grants, for an undisclosed sum, will be used to purchase equipment and supplies for the program and clinic.
The funds from the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation will enable the dental hygiene program to enhance its educational offerings and provide better care to its patients. With the grants, the program has purchased several DXTTR III X-ray trainers, which will allow students to gain firsthand experience in dental anatomy, positioning, and interpretation during x-ray procedures.
In addition to the X-ray trainers, the program has also acquired an additional Nomad handheld X-ray system, which will be used for training, remediation, and patient treatment. Furthermore, multiple innovative lasers have been purchased, along with new low-speed handpieces.
The Greenville Technical College dental hygiene program expressed gratitude for the funding provided by the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation. Traci Willimon, the academic program director, stated, “We have been given the opportunity, with this funding, to purchase equipment to train, certify, and empower dental hygiene students with the most current and relevant technologies to provide the highest quality preventative and therapeutic dental care to their patients.”
By incorporating the latest technologies and training methods, the dental hygiene program at Greenville Technical College aims to benefit the college, the patients they serve, the dental hygiene profession, and the state as a whole. The program provides valuable education and experience to future dental hygienists, preparing them for successful careers in the field.
Furthermore, the program operates a public dental clinic where students receive hands-on training while providing oral health care services to low- and moderate-income individuals. For the upcoming academic year, the clinic plans to provide dental care to nearly 780 patients.
Through its dental hygiene program and clinic, Greenville Technical College plays an essential role in supporting dental health in the community. The grants from the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation will further enhance the program’s ability to deliver high-quality care and education.
