In the heart of Greenville, a beautiful and touching event is set to unfold this weekend that is sure to lift spirits and foster a sense of community. The Greenville Symphony Orchestra is reaching out to the public, offering a completely free live outdoor broadcast of its opening weekend concert. Mark your calendars for Sunday, October 6, as the music begins at 3 p.m. at the TD Stage located at the Peace Center.
This concert is more than just an artistic performance; it symbolizes resilience and the incredible spirit of the community, especially in light of the recent challenges posed by Hurricane Helene. The decision to host this outdoor broadcast comes as a gesture of support and collective healing in the wake of the hurricane’s aftermath.
The featured performance will be none other than Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, often celebrated for its powerful themes of hope, joy, and unity. Accompanying the symphony will be talented guest choirs, including the Bob Jones University Chorale, Furman Singers, and North Greenville University Concert Choir. Renowned soloists Amanda Sheriff, Sara Crigger, Randall Umstead, and Adrian Smith will also take the stage under the direction of Music Director Lee Mills.
As the executive director of the Greenville Symphony, Jessica Satava emphasized, “Greenville and our surrounding communities have been through an enormous ordeal over the last week. At the Greenville Symphony, we’ve been so inspired by our friends and neighbors coming together and helping each other in a time of need.” She expressed hope that this concert would allow the community a moment of respite amid the chaos, and let everyone experience “the healing and uniting power of music.”
With the symphony itself serving as a reminder of collective human spirit, Lee Mills shared his enthusiasm by saying, “Music has a unique ability to transcend difficult times. This is especially symbolic in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, which captures the power of collective human spirit and, to me, is remarkably representative of what our community is going through.”
For those excited to participate in this free outdoor event, set up will begin early as space is first-come, first-served, so be sure to bring your favorite lawn chair or blanket to set down right in front of the LED screen displaying a live feed from the concert inside the Peace Center.
This musical gathering is presented by TD Synnex and is part of an effort that has raised over $16 million since its inception back in 2001. Not only does this event promise an inspiring musical experience, but it also strengthens the community bond as everyone comes together to share in the joy of music.
So mark your calendars and gather your family and friends for a day filled with beautiful music and collective healing. Let’s embrace the uplifting power of community as we celebrate resilience and the harmonious spirit that defines Greenville!
