Greenville Hosts the South Carolina New Play Festival

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Lively arts and culture took over Greenville, South Carolina, from August 8th to August 11th as the city hosted the annual South Carolina New Play Festival. Known as one of the most anticipated events in South Carolina’s theatrical calendar, the festival showcased a wide array of entertaining stage performances featuring musicals, plays, and interactive sessions such as town halls and outdoor variety stages. Adding the final touches of glamour were the Broadway Cabaret performances that further enriched the upbeat ambiance.

Multiple Venues, Multiple Shows

The festival took place in numerous venues across the city, making the arts more accessible to the residents of Greenville. The Gunter Theatre at the Peace Center, CentreStage, The Warehouse Theatre, Greenville Theatre, and South Carolina Children’s Theatre, all renowned performance spaces, hosted the several shows during the four-day extravaganza. Even the outdoor spaces like Falls Park and Greenville One Center were transformed into vibrant performance stages to celebrate the love for performing arts.

Spotlight on Broadway Star – Phillip Boykin

Highlighting the gala was Phillip Boykin, Greenville’s very own Broadway star and TONY-nominee. Marking a special segment on August 11th, Boykin shared his inspiring journey to stardom at 7 p.m. at the Greenville One Center. His narrative was complemented by his captivating performances of selected songs from widely acclaimed shows like Hadestown and Music Man.

Numerous Free Outdoor Performances

Adding more color and excitement to the festival were the several free half-hour outdoor circus shows performed at Falls Park on August 11th. These performances presented a blend of storytelling, comedy, and acrobatics, capturing the attention of children and adults alike. The range of engaging shows included Real McCoy, Street Circus, and NYC YoYo Show, with performances starting from 3 p.m. onwards, offering various viewing options for the audience.
