A candidate for the South Carolina House of Representatives has tragically died in a car crash on May 31, 2024. The incident took place on U.S. Highway 25 near Augusta Road, approximately 15 miles south of Greenville.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol reported that a 2013 Volkswagon sedan was traveling north on the highway around 2:45 a.m. when it collided with the rear of an unoccupied 1998 Freightliner tractor-trailer that was legally parked in the median. The driver of the Volkswagon, identified as 39-year-old John Eric Childs by the Greenville County Coroner’s Office, succumbed to blunt force trauma to the head at the scene of the accident.

John Eric Childs was running for the House District 6 seat in Anderson County. His wife, Jessicka Spearman, who is running for the South Carolina Senate District 3 seat, expressed profound grief over the loss of her husband in an Instagram post. She described Childs as a devoted husband, loving father, and courageous combat veteran who served his country with honor. Spearman emphasized Childs’ belief in a South Carolina where everyone could experience freedom, prosperity, and happiness.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is currently conducting an investigation into the circumstances that led to the fatal crash.
