Hey there, Greenville! Are you ready for some exciting news about the city’s roadway projects? On December 11th, the engineering department updated residents from several neighborhood associations, including the West End, West Greenville, and Haynie-Sirrine communities, about the upcoming plans for 2025. Buckle up because there’s a lot to talk about!
First up on the agenda is the Augusta Street and Vardry Street intersection in downtown. The city is currently in the design phase for this project. Nick DePalma, the assistant city engineer, pointed out there’s a bit of a tricky grade issue caused by nearby railroad tracks. But don’t worry, city engineers are hard at work figuring out how to make this intersection safer and easier to navigate for both cars and pedestrians!
As if that weren’t enough, the plans also include improvements along a 2.3-mile stretch of Augusta Street, which will greatly enhance traffic and pedestrian safety. Director of Engineering Services, Clint Link, mentioned we can expect finalized plans to be ready by the end of the year, with construction scheduled to kick off in the spring of 2025. How’s that for getting the ball rolling?
Next up is a major change coming to Pendleton Street between South Main and Academy streets. The city is looking at transforming this stretch into a two-lane roadway with protected bike lanes on either side! And that’s not all—there are plans for improving the intersection at Pendleton and Vardy streets, along with some much-needed pedestrian safety upgrades.
If that sounds cool to you, wait until you hear about the plans for the Pendleton Street and Textile Street intersection. A traffic signal is on the way, along with upgrades for bike and pedestrian lanes. And yes, a part of Pendleton will get a fresh coat of asphalt, too! All improvements are set to begin in the spring of 2025.
What could be better than smooth roads? Well, South Main Street is next in line for resurfacing, stretching from River Street to Augusta Street, and then down to Pendleton Street. This means new crosswalks will pop up in areas close to popular spots like Fluor Field and The Green apartment complex. Expect resurfacing to start in the summer of 2025; keep your eyes peeled for those changes!
Meanwhile, city engineers are busy conducting safety audits on Green Avenue and Dunbar Street. A draft report was recently shared with residents, highlighting key areas in need of improvements. You might want to jump in and share your thoughts on the report before the December 31 deadline. The assessments are set to wrap up in early 2025, with short-term recommendations rolling out by spring.
Now let’s talk about the Dunbar Connector project—this east-west connection to Dunbar Street from the County Square development is progressing nicely. The city is currently in the process of acquiring a 2-acre property needed for the project. Recently, the city received the green light from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, making things a bit smoother for the plans ahead!
While all this is happening, there are already some projects underway! The Grove Road resurfacing and rehabilitation is in progress thanks to a collaboration with the South Carolina Department of Transportation. And even though there have been delays due to water line replacements and Hurricane Helene, construction will resume once the temperatures warm up in 2025.
Lastly, an exciting bridge replacement is in the works for Queen Street which serves as an important connection between Southernside and West Greenville. Conceptual designs are expected to be finalized by early 2025, with an estimated construction budget of $5 to $6 million. Plus, a new bridge on Willard Street will be built near Unity Park, featuring enhanced safety measures for the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail Network!
With all these projects on the horizon, Greenville is set to see some major enhancements in 2025! From better traffic flow to safer pedestrian pathways, it looks like there’s much to look forward to. Don’t forget to stay engaged and participate in the public meetings to make your voice heard. Keep your eyes peeled for more updates as the year draws closer!
